Hi I am new to the forum.
I did my studies from the old school (was not a serious student planed to only earn money so did not get good grades)
15 year ago bachelors with biology, chemistry and microbiology
12 years ago masters in microbiology
In 2000 I did my MBA with good grades ( I do not know if I can use them for admission)
In 2001 my wife surprised me as I used to always tell her my dream of becoming a Dr. she booked Canadian DAT examination and told me to appear for it I had no time to read or do the carving and got an average of 13. It motivated me to proceed in the future once I had the time.
After years of corporate life now I plan to retire and fulfill my dream but do not know where to start form.
Can someone tell me which books cover the basics with the questions so that I can revise without much effort?
I need your game plan to make me succeed. I can spend 5-6hr daily.
Also guide me about what the dental schools look for in a student and is there any thing other than DAT score they are interested in.
I would appreciate if someone could score the colleges as per the DAT score they look for. It will help me ask those university for the requirement.
Looking forward for your suggestions.

Hi there!
I am almost in the same boat as dentureandcanal. I have a masters degree in BioEngineering with honors but now I really want to get into dental school, I think now is the time. I had taken all the pre-req courses in undergrad (General and organic chem, Biology and more). I know about Kaplan DAT prep book and I keep seeing "DAT Destroyer", "Top Score" and "Achiever" but I am not sure what these are or where to start! Any help/suggestions will be great. Thanks...

Hey guys,
I'm not sure how long ago you took your classes, but if they are more than 10 yrs old, most schools will not accept them. I would contact them directly and ask.

I myself took the test after being out of school for a couple years. To see what I used, you can check out the banana dance thread. I'd say the most important review books for me were Cliffs AP Bio, Princeton Review's AP Chem, and Examkrackers MCAT Orgo. All of these have practice questions within the chapters, which is helpful to check understanding. I didn't particularly like the big Kaplan book, so I didn't use it.

As far as how to study, I would say shoot for understanding, at least at first. For me I did about 1-2 months of reading the review books while taking notes, working practice probs and just getting my head around the material. After that, I did 2-3 weeks of nothing but practice tests (topscore, achiever, kaplan subject tests) and destroyer. Really spend a good amount of time going over the test. Don't just read the explanations but look them up in depth in your books or wiki it, this is how you cement your understanding. The last couple days, I did nothing but go over my notes. This helped keep all those little nitpicky things (like classification, chem equations) fresh in my mind. I also had a notebook with problems I missed, and went over this towards the end as well.

Just make sure to make every minute count and don't neglect any subject. Good luck.
