This article is pay-walled.

Edit: I found this CMS article that I imagine is the primary source for the STAT article (though we should note the obvious bias from the CMS article).

I'm starting to see what y'all mean when you say Medicare wants everyone to work for a private and/or for-profit hospital.

Pretty misleading to say codes have never been re-evaluated when they regularly slash everything across the board.

Eh nothing too surprising here. Codes get re evaluated all the time. Codes that paid 5-6 wRVU 20 years ago now pay just under 2. The more a code is used, the more it gets pared down over time.

Where this will hit some folks will be those ridiculous codes that are used rarely. For me it’s some of the plastics codes I bill for something like Tympanoplasty when I harvest a composite graft through a separate incision. Takes like 5 minutes to do but reimburses almost as much as the primary procedure. Same thing in something like airway reconstruction where i sometimes make a Pedicled muscle flap to reinforce the anastomosis - that <5 minute move reimburses as much as the rest of the case. Rarely used codes that haven’t been revalued in a long time.

It will suck a little but it’s one of those things where current valuations make no sense anyhow. When something is too good to be true, you have to know it will change eventually. Reminds me of back when Medicare would reimburse MSRP for chemo drugs while docs would buy them at a substantial discount. Lots of oncology practices folded when they finally changed that rule, but as a tax payer I don’t want to be paying $1000 for a drug that actually costs $300.

Let me rewrite this headline in brainrot language for future physicians to understand:

No cap, current doc meta nerfed again. Sigma specialists low-key triggered. Alpha specialists on same brainrot meta, like the pleb pcps churnin n burning that rizz. Overall, docs still OP in career meta for THICC FIRE.

This is the funniest thing I've seen on the internet in a while.

Also I hate myself for getting the joke
