Congrats to all the newly matched! What an exciting time for all of you. One of the most frustrating things for M3's preparing for our final year is figuring out where to apply and at which programs we'd be competitive. I was wondering if members of the newly matched class could share info on:

1. Name of the program you matched at AND the # on ROL
2. Step 1, Step 2 scores
3. Although we all know a well-rounded applicant is best, anything else in particular that you thought really helped you match at your program (in-state? research? connections? away rotation? AOA? med school name? clerkship grades? LOR? etc?)

I think this would greatly benefit us underclassmen in the SDN world, not to mention it gives you another outlet to get excited and be proud about your program/upcoming year! Thanks in advance and congratulations again!

Got my#1. 228/233. PD letter is muy important. All the things u mentioned help, each program weighs them differently

1. #1
2. 242/257
3. Research, away, honored clerkships. LOR from ICU Sub-I

1. First choice (not an academically elite program, but a respectable program in the south)
2. 260/250.
3. US allopathic, Honors and HP 1st two years, mostly HP in 3rd year, only Honor was in Medicine. not AOA. Some research experience, no major publication.

1. 3rd choice
2. 260/264
3. US Allopathic, middle of the road state school. Honors in 1st/2nd year. Mostly HP/Honors and 2 passes in 3rd year. Research in med school and undergrad but no pubs.

If you don't mind me asking, what were your top 2 spots? Since with your stats, I would expect you to get your top choice.

1. Baylor, #1 on ROL
2. 231/229
3. Chair letter (i had PDs on the interview trail tell me to say hi to Dr _____.) Otherwise, I thought all my stuff was pretty standard. Ranked 13 programs. 1 Honors 3rd year, the rest high passes. 2nd quartile.

1. #1 choice
2. 275/270
3. AOA, Publications, Honors in all clerkships except Int Med & Anes - HP. My letter writers knew me well and were able to write about tangible experiences. Hard to assess what else might have helped

Holy ****, with stats that could rock plastics, you must really love anesthesia to be going into this field. Props!👍

Just so we can get a few more details:

--Board Scores:
--AOA and class rank: if known
--Reputation of medical school: (top 10, top 25, etc)
--Research:
--Honors in clerkships:
--# and where you did away rotations:
--# of programs you applied to:
--# of interviews:
--Where matched:
--Matched at what number on rank list:
--Anything that helped your app: (ie: a phone call to a program, big-wig letter of recs, MD/PhD, other degree, SDN Forum, etc)
--Prelim year:

--Other:
1. What were your three favorite programs?
2. What did you like specifically about these programs?
3. Ultimately, what were the key factors you used in making your rank list?

A lot of this is taken from the rad onc thread. If you don't feel like answering all of this just no problem at all! Any advice is appreciated and thanks to everyone who contributed so far 🙂

Given that the major cut is the interview, I think it would be informative to post your stats and the places that turned you down for interviews.

1. Mayo (Rochester), first choice
2. 238/245
3. Middle of the road state school, AOA, honors for all core clerkships, away rotation at site, no letter of recommendation from PD or other academic anesthesiologist (all letters from community physicians), research in non-medical field.

Haha thanks!! Funny enough I considered plastics briefly but realized it was too narrow a field for me, also considered gen surg- but I prefer managing surgery pts to doing the actual surgery. Anesthesia+Critical Care fit the bill!! Congrats on the match to you too!

MikanDoc:
No away rotations
Applied to 27 programs, withdrew from a few, got 16 interviews, went on 13, ranked 10
Emailed my top 3 choices, told #1 explicitly that they were at the top of my list
Doing prelim medicine for intern year.

3 favorite programs - Hopkins, Penn, Brigham

1) #1 choice
2) 198/200
3) Worked my butt off for my program during 3rd year; did an externship and worked ~6 shifts a month, did multiple research projects, one publishing and one poster at ASA, president of AIG, etc. All that got me letters from head of department and PD. A lot of volunteering.
4) I applied to 30 programs and received 8 interviews. I cancelled one of them, and ranked 7.

I want post this to give people who have bad step score some hope. Just work really hard for your department, do a lot to put on your CV and get good letters. Good luck to everyone!

Where did you match?

1. (name withheld), #14 on ROL
2. 238, 260
3. Had plenty of clinical honors, got positive comments about my chair letter and personal statement. I had interviews at lots of "top" programs as well as plenty of mid-range programs but wound up hitting my scramble-shield. In hindsight, I guess something I thought of as a minor academic "red-flag" came back to bite me bad enough to make me just not competitive enough at most competitive places I was looking at or I really don't interview well. TBH, I'm still not 100% sure what happened.

I'd rather not say where, but it is a program in the midwest that is probably thought of as a middle of the road program. Of course I think its one of the best 🙄

I was curious, that's all. If you wish to PM me then that's fine, if not then that's cool too.

I'm confused. Which of these actually represents you?

Arch is posting for those who wish to remain anonymous.
Arch is an attending

1. Tennessee-Knoxville (my #1)
2. 238/247
3. Non-traditional student, decent school

1. Southwest program, Top of my ROL.
2. 220/236, 511/545
3. Osteopathic student at a midwest school. Third quartile class rank. Light, unpublished public health research MS1 summer. No honors third year, but great evals. Excellent LOR's (per interviewers, I didn't get to read them) from community hospital attendings, 2 anes, 1 surg, 1 FP. Did an audition at another program further down my ROL, but not the program I matched at. I have family in the area of my program, I'm not sure if it helped. I got my 100% complete ERAS app (boards, letters, etc) in on 9/1. Applied to approx 50 programs, received around 35 interviews, and interviewed at >15 programs. I only applied to programs that had accepted D.O.'s in the past. Most programs were located in the Midwest and northeast.

If the person that submitted this info would contact me, I would really appreciate it. I won't divulge any info to any other parties. I'm from out west and would like to end up back out there.

If whoever sent this in could PM me, that would be awesome. I myself have a clinical "red flag" and I'm trying to get honest feedback about how bad it might actually be, besides "go get em champ!!"

If the original poster of this message could PM me, I am very curious to pick your brain. I have similar stats and would love to talk to you. Thanks!!

1. matched at my number 1. Mid range program on the east coast.

2. 210/225

3. No aways, a few honors on clerkships, first 2 years were all passes. Great LORs - 2 anesthesia and 1 anesthesia intensivist. Even with my scores I had no trouble getting plenty of interviews for gas as well as prelim medicine/TY programs. If your numbers are like mine, apply to PLENTY of programs but focus on the region that you're in. Skip the really elite programs.

1) Matched at my #1 (one of the Harvard Programs)
2) 241/242
3) good pre-clinical grades (high passed pharm/physio), high passed every rotation 3rd year, honored my anesthesia rotation at my home institution (no aways), mid tier US MD school

as a side note - got the interview invite mid-January so I assume someone cancelled and I was called off the wait list (thank you whoever that was!) and just shined during the interview.

lesson for upcoming 4th years: interview is king for getting your top choice.

Haha that very well could have been me. I cancelled 2 Harvard-affiliated interviews in January. Congrats (to whoever sent that in)!

1. Ucdavis, number 1 rol
2. 221/220
3. I'm from norcal. I got interviews from Davis, USC, irvine, and Loma Linda. I didn't get interviews from Stanford, ucsf, ucla, ucsf. I got mixed h, hp, p my third year. I honored anesthesia 4th year. If you have similar scores I think you can expect a similar interview trail. A friend of mine going to ucla got mid 220s but he was from LA. As an aside, nyu was high on my list and attainable with these scores. The biggest thing I did was to do an away at Davis and since this was my third month of anesthesia (home subI and loma linda) I was very confident in my skills. I think this got me in even though my scores were average. I also am an above average interviewee.

The scores on this website as you know are a bit inflated. Don't let this get you down. I thought California was unattainable with my scores, but my feeling is I would have got into any of the programs i interviewed at in cali if I ranked them number 1. So in summary: apply confidently and do an away at your top choice (after your home subi in anesthesia of course). Attack your vsas application! Call in to the program coordinators and ask for away spots!

1. Matched at my #1
2. Step 1: 258. Step 2: 268 (took in January 2011)
3. Good Step 1 score, pretty good clerkship grades (H in IM, surg, neurology, psychiatry, OB/GYN), AOA. No aways. No anesthesia research. Good letters (so I was told).

1. Matched at #1, UMiami
2. 226/243
3. Middle of class, No research, good letters from mentors. ICU, CT anesthesia and away rotations (gen. anesthesia) early in 4th year. Took Step 2 in Oct-Nov, but received all interview invites prior to the score release.

1. definitely considered an "elite" program, #2 on ROL
2. 250+ on both Step 1 and 2, but with a drop in step 2
3. "top 25" medical school
- clinical grades: mostly honors, a couple HP, pass in medicine
- middle half of class
- non-published non-anes research in medical school; did more substantial non-anes research in college
- a couple non-anesthesia related leadership roles (stuff like clubs, but not anything like admin/student gov't)
- no PD or chair letter (but did have senior anes faculty letter), only 1 anesthesia letter
- did an away at my #1 choice and got honors but did not match there
- didn't feel like I needed to do more than one away, and in retrospect wouldn't have done any
- applied to 27 programs, got interviews at 25 (including a couple obviously off waitlist), went to 17 - I realized I should have scheduled some "safety" programs later (i.e. Jan/Feb) so I could have canceled them, but I didn't know I was going to get all those interviews
- the holidays killed my enthusiasm for interviewing; I DREADED interviews and despised my suit by the time January came around. (including prelims, I interviewed from mid-Oct to early-Feb)
- sent an email only to my #1, but didn't match there
- no personal connections to any institutions (except of course the faculty in the dept at my school)
- submitted ERAS on the first day; after MSPE came out only got 1 or 2 more interviews
- I think submitting early definitely helped

Since I was more concerned about this part, here's info on prelims: I was batting a little over 0.500 for PGY-1 interview invites and definitely got a better response rate from programs I contacted and told them I was really interested. (I did this when I started hearing of programs giving out interviews and hadn't yet heard back from them myself.)

Tough choice ranking because:
3 favorite programs in terms of the program itself: Hopkins, BIDMC, Stanford
3 best locations: UCSD, UCLA, UCSF

Factors: Personality of people I met, Location

1. #2 ROL
2. Step 1 217, step 2 252
3. No aways, no clinical or elective honors. Applied 48, got 27, went to 17, ranked 13. Dedicated to neuro. PM me for other details.

I just wanted to thank everyone, especially the more "average" applicants or people with a flaw or two on their application for posting. Not only is it very encouraging but it helps to see the real state of things. SDN has actually been encouraging me towards anesthesia!!
IgM

1. Brigham and Women's - #1
2. 259/260
3.
-Top 20 medical school.
-H (Peds, surgery, medicine, psych and anesthesia electives)
-HP (ob/gyn, Neuro).
-Not AOA.
-Poster presentation from research but that's all. -Tremendous amounts of teaching activities that were took up half of my interview time at all institutions.
-No aways
-Applied to 16 anesthesia programs, Interviewed at 11, ranked 9.
-Had STELLAR letters. Multiple comments from PD and interviewers about them.
-Multiple comments that my PS was very interesting and took on a new perspective on the question, "why anesthesia"

-My favorite programs: Brigham, MGH, BID and Penn.
-Key factors - teaching opportunities, residents that are happy and work very hard, support system, LOCATION and opportunities coming out of residency, lack of cRNAs, quality of possible co-residents

1. Brigham and Women's-Number 1
2. Mid 260's/High 270's
3. ~top 50 school, all honors in clinicals except one HP. Top 15 percent grades but no AOA. Some research but no pubs, was enough to have something to talk about in interviews and convince people I was interested in research. No aways, one letter for someone who's not a big name but who I got to know well and wrote great things about me. Another letter from a bigger name.

Applied to 20, got 18 interviews. Two I didn't get were from safeties. If you have the numbers no need to over-apply

Favorite programs: interviewed at all the big names but Brigham was the only one that really stood out for me. Great environment, smartest people I met, unpretentious, great opportunities after, and residents who all would hang out after work. Also liked Duke, but location was a negative.

1. Stanford, #1
2. 255/262

No AOA, top 1/3 of class, Non-Harvard MA med school. 1 pub from research completed in undergrad, FAER fellow between MS1/2. H in all clerkships except IM & Family Med (HP). 1 year anesthesia tech work experience.

Only away @Stanford. Applied to 15 residency programs, 14 interviews, ranked 13. Went with 2 anesthesia LOR (both Stanford anesthesia grads), FAER PI letter, Surgery clerkship director letter. FAER & tech experience were big talking points at many interviews.

Top 3: Stanford, BWH, UCLA

My advice for fellow students is to work hard during core clerkships, impress during your home anesthesia elective, & if there's a program you have your eyes on, schedule an away there and try to shine. Read before cases, do pre-ops, be friendly & sociable. These things go a long way. Once you get to the interview, it's really just about being personable and trying to sell your strengths. Good luck!

For any PGY-1's that haven't responded, us M4's would really appreciate it if you could reply. Especially with application season upon us. Thanks. Here's the info again:

I know these threads are moderately engaging diversions for applicants, but the reporting bias is off the charts, even by SDN standards. Are you really learning anything when most of the posts in this thread tells you they got 99/99 and matched at their #1?

I know during application time, you look for any anecdotal assurance you can that you have a xx% shot at y program. I was there a year ago. But, as they say often in the hospital, is this knowledge going to change your management of the patient? i.e. are you going to change how you apply or interview based on what's in this thread? I'm guessing the answer is no, in which case you should stop wasting time and get to work on your personal statements.

Yeah, jesus christ...I'm a 3rd year with a 237 and I thought I was sitting relatively pretty for anesthesia...now I'm half-wondering if I need to start considering other options lol.
