If anyone could answer these questions?:

-have people heard back from the 4 yr RCSI program yet? i've only seen 6 yr program news so far
-someone noted that Trinity's 1st yr is just 6 months long.... so you actually get 6 full months off, or does everyone do electives?
-also would be interesting if accepted ppl state whether they're going to accept without seeing any of the campuses in ireland. i've seen UCC extensively and Trinity, beautiful, but not sure if i'd have the balls to accept something I've yet to see

Good luck to all!

I interviewed for the 4 year GEP program at RCSI and I haven't heard anything yet.

As for the campuses, I've been to Trinity, UCD, and RCSI and they're all great. From what I've heard of UCC also has an excellent campus. Limerick is new to medicine and their campus is under construction so, it's a bit of a shuffle but their supposed to be finishing their new health science building in the next year I think. Hope that helps.

Just got the FedEx package with an acceptance letter for RCSI's GEP program. I'm in Vancouver, Canada.

ugh, im stuck in school. i wonder if the package is waiting for me at the door...

Got my acceptance letter from RCSI for their GEP today via FedEx. I'm from Ontario, Canada.

Congrats to all those accepted! Hopefully here will be another fellow Canadian added to that list in the next few months 🙂.

Although, I submitted my app through ABP for the second round, so I don't expect to hear anything about interviews or acceptances for at least few weeks.

hey guys i just checked with FedEx too and they said they attempted to deliver a package today! Have anyone heard back from UCD for the first round of offers? Any clue when they'd start giving out second round? I heard trinity gives out offers later, in like two weeks

woot the package just arrived 30 sec ago accepted for rcsi 4yr gep!

It was me who said 1st year is 6 months in TCD. I said 6 months of school (there are gaps in between such as 1 month of christmas break and many weeks off before exams). So your summer will be around 4.5 months. No you cannot do electives in your first year. Electives are done in your final years only....

Congrats to everyone else who's hearing back. Anyone received anything from UCD yet?

Also, asd979- how many people are in your class at UCC, and what's the breakdown of Candians, Americans, and other peeps?

Any RCSI acceptance notices received today by US applicants?

Thanks.

I'm also wondering if the ABP system somehow would have your name withheld from other Universities that haven't given you a response yet if you already got accepted to one. Anyone got any ideas?

50 students in my class, half North American, half Irish. Only about 6 Americans. Class gets significantly larger in Jan of second year when you get the 3rd year direct entry students mixed in...who are significantly younger.

Hey congrats what are your stats and which school did you get into?

I doubt it because I was accepted to both UCC and RCSI about 5 days apart. Perhaps if you send in your acceptance forms/deposit etc. then they would communicate with the other universities left over.

Thought I'd share my info:

My GPA is: ~3.8
My MCAT Scores were: Biological Science 12; Physical Science 12; Verbal 10; Writing P

I applied to: UCC, UCD, RCSI, Trinity, NUIG
I was accepted at: UCC
I was waitlisted at: don't know yet
I was rejected from: RCSI

Does anyone know how many Canadian students Trinity accepts? And when they start mailing out offers?

I have about two weeks left to respond to the UCC offer, but I don't know if I should hold out for Trinity! Advice is much appreciated!

When I e-mailed ABP they told me Trinity should be sending out offers in two weeks, I asked this on Tuesday so two weeks from the Tuesday that just passed. Good luck!

How do people feel about mailing Letters of Update to the Irish medical schools (ABP) to which they have applied?

What do you mean by letter of update? Personally, I have had an extra reference letter sent from the place I volunteer, as well as updated transcripts every time I get a new mark.

I'd call the ABP office to inquire about the best way to send a letter of update. In terms of content, I assume it would be a brief letter and/or e-mail detailing new volunteer- or medically- related activities, research, classes, and grades you are taking part in that did not make it onto your initial application. If you've made some significant progress or accomplishments (ex: successfully raised funds for a mission trip, had a paper published) in previously mentioned activities, you could include those to.

On a separate note, does anyone have input on what the demographic for RCSI's 4-year GEP classes is like? I've heard (and read from some previous threads here) about some controversy regarding a modest proportion of middle-eastern students who allegedly buy their way into the school and receive preferential treatment and help on getting through exams. I don't mean to slander the institution or offend anyone here who may have any arabic/middle-eastern background- I'm just wary that this issue has cropped up more than once as I've been doing my homework on RCSI. The main thread that talked about this was started a few years ago, but I'm not sure how much things may have changed since then.

For those who are considering RCSI here, is anyone going to the 6-year program?

I've also heard rumors of this (specifically from friends attending RCSI and those in the local area at UCD). However, like any medical school, your experience and success is how you make of it. RCSI places a tremendous amount of students into great residencies (for example, this week's RCSI match party had Emory, UPenn, Mayo, etc. thrown around as placements). It has a strong program. Also keep in mind that the issue of "buying your way in" occurs at schools across the globe...

So I emailed ABP asking if trinity and galway send out offers for the 4yr and 5yr programs at the same time, this is the reply.

TCD offers went out yesterday so keep an eye on your mail. NUIG offers will be going out in the next 2 weeks or so.

I also asked how many US students get accepted, this was his answer to that.

We usually place upwards of 250 North American students annually. This year should be no different.

So UCD GEP offers went out an unfortunately I didn't receive a first round offer, I heard from ABP that upwards of 400 ppl are on the waitlist due to the number of applications they've received this year.

So...must choose between UCC and RCSI!

Looks like we're in the same boat- what are you leaning towards?

I'm still in the process of trying to straighten out how the day-to-day schedule and overall curriculum for UCC compare to RCSI, and also get some insight on how well-prepared UCC American students are for the USMLE. Any input from current UCC students would be much appreciated!

Was leaning towards RCSI: I guess if the intention is to come back to to Canada/US then they are more accommodating for writing licensing exams (or so I've heard from someone studying there right now). The standard of education across Ireland is pretty standard (except for, say Limerick), so I mean...*shrugs* Initially, I felt that if there were more NA students, then the benefit would be a lot of those ppl would be wanting to come back to Canada/US so there would be a lot of information/knowledge available and passed around in that environment.

I've heard conflicting information from people of different schools saying they are glad they chose their school for this and that reason, so ultimately, haha, it comes down to what you prefer based on what little we know.

Ask and you shall receive!

1) Day to day schedule:

The first thing you will notice at UCC is that no week is the same. Classes vary from week to week, and the time you start and finish will also vary. The earliest you will start is 9, and the latest I've finished is 5. The only consistent classes every week is two SGL (small group learning) sessions at the same time and day. You can usually count on at least one Anatomy cadaver session per week, as well as a Physiology lab, with a few Pharmacology and Pathology tutorial/lab sessions sprinkled in every so often. Schedules also change relatively frequently and as such, are updated every Thursday.

2) Curriculum:

I'm just finishing my second semester of first year so I've just begun to understand the reasoning behind the curriculum. First semester is very broad, no particular system is emphasized and it can feel overwhelming for some (especially those with no science backgrounds). In Anatomy, the upper and lower limbs were studied (muscles, bones, nerves, vessels). Biochemistry consisted mostly of metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, TCA cycle, cholesterol formation, etc. Physiology mostly dealt with action potentials and nervous system conduction. Pathology was an introduction to microbiology. Pharmacology taught Cholingergic, Adrenergic drugs, along with anti-inflammatories, anti-biotics, anti-fungals, and anti-virals. Very little clinical skills were taught in that semester, mostly just an introduction to history taking. Ethics and Law was relatively short as well. Epidemiology was pretty a pretty consistent once a week lecture with some presentations. I hate Epi so I won't speak much about it.

This term has been very specific. The Cardiovascular system was the focus in every subject from January until about mid-February. We just finished Respiratory and are covering Renal, with a bit of Reproduction as well. Lots of clinical skills are taught this term, since we have the OSCE in about 3 weeks. History taking, Cardiovascular/Respiratory examinations are a major focus.

3) USMLE:

Since this is an Irish school, USMLE is not really a priority for the faculty teaching us. We are taught everything that would be covered by the USMLE, but we are on our own when it comes to studying for it. However, after speaking to upper year students it seems that everyone does reasonable on it. I'm told that if you start studying after Christmas of your second year until the summer you write it, it is plenty of time to do well. For whatever reason, students at UL are panicking regarding the USMLE. My friend in 2nd year at UL keeps saying he should have started studying for the exam from day 1 of first year. I don't know if that should be the case for other schools due to the differences in teaching.

Congrats, quick question was that for the 4yr or 5yr programs??

Hey Bagh77 - I also got accepted to TCD - would you like to change emails and maybe say in contact some how.. Where are you from ? Canada or USA and now that we are accepted our next obstacle is the COST. Do you have any clue what you are going to do about that? The banks only give 150,000 which is good, but not enough, what are your ideas? Do you have any informatin about living and rooming, becuase they did not send me any with my letter of acceptance.

I am from Ottawa, Ontario Canada - Doing my Masters in Neuroscience with a 3.8/4 unvergraduate GPA and a 3.7/4 Masters GPA.

Thanks alot

Someone was asking about the 6yr programs- UCD and RCSI have already sent out their offers, and Galway should have sent theirs out this week. Anyone else applying for 6 year besides me?
