Stats used to screen....rotation apps??

Anyone else encounter this practice? I'm a 3rd year trying to set up a few away rotations and have been asked for board scores a few times already...thought it would be competitive to get a residency, but I didn't think getting rotations would be all that tough.

Some programs have so many applicants (Carolinas) for 4th year rotations that they have to do some kind of screening to set them up.

Personally I think your best experience will be had at a program with fewer students rotating through, as you'll get to see more, and get more 1 on 1 time with residents/attendings.

My home program fits the description you mentioned. The point of my first post was that nothing quite kicks ya in the junk like being screened out of a program before you rotate through.

How do you like MLK? I used to volunteer there as an undergrad..

MLK is okay, definitely better than not doing EM at all. Search my previous posts for more detailed information.

cheecheroo, i got rejected from one of the places i applied for a 3rd yr rotation. Then as a 4th yr they offered me an interview. Go figure. The "important" letter is vastly overrated IMO, a letter from someone who knows you better works better.

Actually, Carolina's doesn't screen. The application process is simply verifying who you are and that you want to be there.

A classmate of mine recently inquired about a 4th year EM rotation at a popular program that I am interested in and was told that the program did not accept students from our school... not because we are a DO school, for insurance reasons, or for some problem with one of our students -- just because. Talk about being kicked in the junk...

Could we start a list of the schools that "screen" and/or just not take students from where ever or are easy to apply to???
I know the MAYO application is a bear-asking for letters and scores...and CV...etc
Dever was OK, just the background check...
Hennepin was easy
Akron general is very easy (point/click)
Working on WVU now...

Jacksonville was very easy as well.
I sent enquiries to Austin, South Carolina, and Maricopa and never received any kind of response.

Austin has most of their EM spots taken up by UTMB students since it's officially a home institution for them. I applied extremely early (JANUARY)and was told I'd be the first on the list if there were any spots left in April when they place their 4th years from UTMB, but she said not to get my hopes up.

Not interested in the program, just interested in being home....🙂

Austin does not have an Emergency Medicine residency (maybe it will in 3-5 years), which you guys probably already knew. The San Antonio military program and the Scott and White program residents rotate through here for a couple of months, but I was advised not to do my rotation here for LORs because they do not have their own program.

EM is a required 4th year rotation at UTMB so it would be really hard to find a spot at Austin, particularly because there are very few spots and a lot of 4th years not interested in EM really want to do this relatively light rotation in Austin.

It is true that a letter from someone who knows you is good, but it is even better it it is from someone who knows you and is also well known in the EM community. Well known is someone who is a department head, residency director or at least assistant residency director. One of your letters should be from someone like that.

Not particularly on topic, but we won't be rotating through Brack (the county hospital in Austin) next year. Instead, it looks like we'll be doing CVICU here in Temple.

I had the same deal with Bellevue/NYU. I misread the instructions, and even got a chest x-ray (because I thought they required it, even with a negative PPD). The irony is that the department at the hospital I was at as a student didn't read the CXR within a year, so they didn't get reimbursed (got the "you are not responsible for this charge" letter from my insurance - score!). Bummer for them.
