How much does it cost to keep it active? I would say yes, keep it! You never know when it may come in handy - what if you need to take some time off of D-school for whatever reason? It would be nice to have that to fall back on.

If you work for a practice that will let you take patients during breaks and especially in the summer, I would absolutely retain your license. Hygiene brings in excellent money, and there really isn't much else to do in such a short summer unless you want to do research within your school or something like that.
Also, if it's not a huge pain, you should always retain any medical licenses...there's no reason not to, and you'd hate yourself if you needed it and simply let it lapse. Again, it depends on how much coned credit and money you need, but I don't see a reason not to.
It'll be great to have all your fellow classmates drooling over the fact that you get real patients and will rock all the perio stuff 😉

I would keep your license. You may never know when you will need an extra $200-300 and can work a day to get it. Also, dental school is not that hard if you don't want to specialize and you could work a day or so while going through school.
Well, you are probably right. I am licensed in 2 states right now and am not sure where I will end up going to school. I may wait a few more weeks on words from another school and then I'll pay up if I am staying. It is only 127.00$ right now (because I didn't pay the 63.50 back in October - stupid I know- but I didn't think I would be able to stay in this state at the time) You add 5$ a day for each day you wait to pay from Feb 1st on. I have to pay by March 1st to keep it. It would be nice to Temp around for extra money when there is time. Do you think there would be any added benefit in retaining the license for dental school purposes?

Then definitely do it. You'll start to see that $127 is a mere sneeze compared to some of the checks you'll be writing for supplies, articulator, fees, etc. 😉 As for benefits during dental school...if you're licensed in a state, that means that you can do whatever a hygienist can do clinically, which is more than a dental student at certain stages. Who knows...maybe they'll give you more perio patients, or let you give advice to your classmates when you start prophies and the like.
I think more than that is the ability to make some good money and get some more clinical practice, which is never wasted. I think that practicing while you're a student will be differently than when you practiced as a hygienist...you'll be looking for what sort of clinic you'll want to run for yourself...what kind of business....what YOU want in your OWN hygienists, that sort of thing. It will be a different experience. Just call around and make sure you'd be able to get some hours somewhere!
