Stay Unemployed or be a tech?

Does anyone know how to post polls? I was going to post a poll that read- Would you consider working as a pharmacy tech while looking for a pharmacist position. yes or no

I don't think a pharmacist can legally work as a tech? Not due to state law but I would think due to company law, like someone with a license and a PharmD would have to be given a higher wage right? Cause couldn't the pharmacist later sue for back pay?

And then if that was the case, even if they wanted to leave off the PharmD part from their resume, what if they never had a tech license? Is someone even allowed to dually hold a tech and pharmacist license with the state board?

Can you even work in that capacity after you're licensed? You would still be allowed to counsel, verify, etc since you're a pharmacist. You would pretty much be working as a second pharmacist for a fraction of the cost, which I'm sure chains would love. No way you would get to be solely a tech and get to say "nope, I'm not gonna verify or counsel" unless you simply never mentioned your license at all.

Hivemind.

I don't think many states require a tech license, at least I know NY does not. We've got tons of high school and college kids working as techs. I don't see why you couldn't hold both licenses, but at the same time I'm not sure why you would. I just let mine lapse since I figured it was pointless because of my intern permit, and I would assume most techs who go through pharmacy school don't bother re-certifying either. Most people probably assumed they'd have a pharmacist job, not have to remain a tech.

Yeah I think 99.99999% would probably just let their tech license expire.

I know for a fact my intern license will expire the year I graduate
and I'm not sure it can be renewed after that, but I couldn't find info with my state board on dual licensure so who knows.

I work retail and really want to switch over to hospital, but all of them require at least 2-3 years hospital experience as a pharmacist, which I don't have... I was thinking about applying for a job as a tech in a hospital to try to get my experience that way and hopefully get a job as a pharmacist in the hospital later on. I thought about it, but of course I never went through with it. However, if I was unemployed, I would work as a tech since it's better than nothing, plus I'll get my experience, but I'm not willing to verify if I'm not being paid for it.

I don't know about working as a tech...but you can do per diem. You might have to look at hospital an hour or two away and be willing to drive to get some experience. It's not a bad idea to do it one weekend a month or so.

I have a similar dilemma. Recently licensed but unemployed. I also don't mind working as a tech (I think MI techs dont need a tech license, correct me if I'm wrong).
For me,I just want to get more experience & build up my confidence bcoz I took a break from work after internship,to be able to focus on naplex, mpje. Now, I am at the end of my rope - RPh with no job:scared:
If not as a tech,do you think I can volunteer just in order to gain experience? Does volunteering sound like a sensible option as a means to eventually getting a job ? Do employers consider such possiblities? I mean what other avenues are there? 😱 Yikes !! Help, please.....

Wow! How long have you been looking? Surely some chain is willing to hire, you just have to be ready to relocate...

Wow, this is just messed up. Pharmacist resorting to tech work for jobs. Whats next? Pharmacist doing medical records?

As for the question: IMO I would rather look for work anywhere there is a job in the other 49 states than to work as a tech. You're better off trying to find a job anywhere you can find it as unemployed rph than to work as a tech unless you're doing it to create a contact or waiting for an opening at the same site. Try applying to multiple positions on indeed.com and see what replies you get. I graduated in 2010 and was able to find a job in ltc making 140k a year. A friend of mines got demoted to part time at cvs and I was able to hook him up with a job in ltc in another city for the same company.

Yo what company you with? I work part time in LTC and the salary is nowhere near that high! Cali or NYC?

Just with that little bit of info, I could probably guess who you work for. 😛

I wish it were that easy to just hop over to the next state and get a job. If it weren't for the long waiting period for licensing and all the money that goes into it, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. Lord knows Ida been outta here months ago. But, in the mean time I need ta work somewhere. I gotta hide my Pharm. D. on the resume and make up something else, or else I won't even get 12 an hour doing something. A friend a mine recommends dancing on a pole. LOL

I may have overstated the 49 states. The process is long but getting licensed in 2-3 neighboring states would help. It can actually come in handy if you live in the gulf states where there could be hurricanes and you may need to relocate.

it all depends on the location and the type of job (call or no)

LTC jobs in my area, which are very rare to come open, start at 48.5 per + a bit more in call

Depending on your looks/skill/location, you can certainly earn more than a pharmacist would. Unfortunately, you can probably only keep that job for about 10 years, and the hours are a bit atypical... all nights and weekends pretty much.

A friend of a friend worked their way through college doing this, she said she would make $500/night absolute minimum on fridays and saturdays, but usually closer to about 700/night. She would also do a few shifts during the weekdays, although those didn't pay as well since it wasn't as busy. So ballpark $2000/week, working maybe 3-4 shifts of only 4-6 hours each or so, paid all in cash.

Post a picture and I'll let you know if this is a better investment of your time than pharmacy
But yes, this will be a big factor.

LOL, I found this on an ad for a pharmacist position.

wait... I don't get it. How can a pharmacist be unemployed? There are so many jobs? And and...and...didn't you work really hard, and and, set yourself apart, and and......

Is having all my teeth enough to set me apart for a job at Walmart?

ya you should get BCPS to set yourself apart from the rest..... oh ya, you need a few years hospital experience to take that exam to "set yourself apart"

maybe you should go to a big city where there are so many pharmacist jobs because the population is SO BIG they need so much more prescriptions than a small town....

in the future, baby boomers will retire and need so many prescriptions so there will be a lot of new pharmacist jobs created by that because there is a BIG reimbursement

oh wait, this is all bull**** lies.....

the only way you will set yourself apart from the rest is

1.) blonde wig
2.) implants
😀
