staying with a student host when you live in that city?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I received an interview invite to the city I am currently living in (I am not originally from this city, but am doing research and living in an apt). Is it weird to ask to stay with a student host for the interview? Even though I am living there, I do not know much about the school and feel that I could really benefit from learning about it from peers.

When I was a student host I got emails giving the ppl's names and where they were coming from fwiw.

I wouldn't. Typically schools only have a few students willing to host, so the polite thing to do would be to leave it to someone traveling. Also as a student I would be a bit confused why you wanted to sleep on my couch the night before a bit interview when you lived 10 minutes away.

If you have questions about the school you can ask students during the interview. Feel it out, most schools have a few students who will give out e-mail addresses and stuff if you want to contact them for specific questions.

I agree with this, just use your own apartment. While I can see how it would be helpful to stay with another student, it'd be a little awkward when they find out you didn't *really* need to stay with them.

There is ample time to ask students about the school. Don't impose on a student host. While we're willing to host students in need, you'd be abusing the system in my mind.
