But it's really not like that. As harsh as it is, no Carib grad will ever match a top-tier residency, no matter the numbers. And only rarely does a Carib grad even get considered for something like derm or rad onc. It's not simply that Carib grads need better scores for the same residencies, they need better scores for different residencies. Sadly the only residency a Carib grad can get is one that US MDs and DOs don't want, unless those US MDs or DOs are like 5 standard deviations below the Carib grad and are scrapping for anything they can get.
I completely agree on giving them props when they do match. It's such a tough road, but just because some make it doesn't mean it should be encouraged as a viable path for everyone. It costs a lot of dough to wager on whether you'll be one of the success stories of the Caribbean.
Good luck, Paul, but I really hope you've exhausted all your other options if you're set on going to the Caribbean. SMP, post-bac, grade-replacement for DO, etc.
