Step 1 for Optho?

What kind of Step 1 score is needed for Optho generally speaking? This is assuming an applicant is top quarter of class, not AOA, and has a few publications (2)? I have been looking through Optho match threads on this forum, and I have seen students with average step 1 scores (220s) match into Optho? I know Optho is one of the more competitive specialties, but if that is the case, why do students with average Step 1 scores match into Optho?

What is the average Step 1 score for Optho?

What is the minimum score needed nowadays to not be ruled out by mid-tier/low-tier Optho programs?


I am not gunning for top Optho programs.

I am not gunning for top Optho programs.

sfmatch has all the stats for you. It's something like a 238 avg for ophtho. I've been told the avg at top places can get to upper-250s, so I imagine the avg at lesser-competitive places could be in the 220s. A faculty member at a relatively top program told me that their absolute cutoff, for which they won't consider anyone below, is 230. But that's a top program.

There is an article that discusses this published in 2012. Search 2012and ophthalmology and match on pubmed.

I know people who interviewed at top 10 programs with scores in 220s... Every program is different
