search for prior posts by BKN. You will have to sort through quite a few posts, but recently (about 2 months ago) he posted a statistical analysis of step I scores vs 1st choice match. Pretty cool stuff

Hello:
I couldn't find this information in the "sticky" section or FAQs - Is there anywhere to find data on the average Step 1 scores for matched residents into EM residency programs? Thanks.

If y'all find that, please post the link on here....

Hey do any of you guys know where to find which residencies have a cut off and what those cut offs are? Thanks!

All of them have a cutoff at around ~250, so if you don't have that score you should probably think about going into Family Medicine.

Sometimes they post them on their websites.

Isn't a bit early for these "do I have the right board score" type questions. Application season is still a long way off. Lets get to more important questions like tabasco or not in your bloody mary's.

No option ... tobasco is key. Might as well ask, vodka or not in your tomato juice!

Is that it? How do they keep out the riff-raff?

Interviewers typically ask questions such as, "When your family moved, did you use a truck and a trailer hitch to transport your house to its new location?"

Dammit.

I hear Peds is nice...

lol.. word has it your program has a cutoff! I think it would be better to see who fits best. I mean, to survive there, quite frankly, you need more than a high step I score!! 4reaaal!

Yep 225 was our official cutoff. Kind of ******ed to have when the program has difficulty attracting residents in the first place.

Wow, 225 is a heck of a cutoff score. Any idea how many programs have higher cutoffs?

I think turtle's program in Delaware and Emory also have cut offs of 220 or 225..

Do you mean high or low? EM is moderately competitive and it doesn't seem crazy for a moderately competetive field to select interviewees who beat the mean...

Well, I was just thinking that a 225 eliminates prpbably 80% of the people that sat for the USMLE. I know EM is competitive, but I was thinking that personality and "match" would be emphasized a little more. There has to be a way to narrow down the application pool I suppose. I feel a bit sorry for those that are otherwise great candidates, but may have had a bad test day.

Speaking of bad days...anyone know if there is a cutoff for step 2? :scared:

Along those lines, do we have to take step 2 before we apply? Also, what about # of honors/class rank cut-offs?

Actually, it doesn't eliminate 80%, it eliminates about 60% I would guess. I think 218 was the mean, with a SD of around 20 (these numbers are approximate, I can not remember exactly). So, a cut-off of around 234 or so would be 80%.

Thanks for checking that out. I was wondering the same thing.

Thanks. I was simply guessing...

216 was my mean and 24 was the SD for my test. Same for my friend that got his test back a few weeks ago. With a normal bell curve, 84% of people were below 240. I don't have Z-tables or anything on me to exact out 80%.

Life will go on though. Close enough to what ElZorro said.

I have found info on "top" programs, but what about less competitive programs-and I don't mean "bad". I want good training, but don't care where I go to get it. I probably will not be a competitive candidate based on my step 1 and preclinicals, although my 3rd year grades are excellent-haven't taken step 2 yet, but am not expecting miracles. any ideas where to apply?

Apply where you want to live. You have to have some preference? Do you want to be near the beach, the mountains, family, etc.

Also what are your academic interests? EMS, Peds tox etc?

Best advice is apply where you are interested in going and you will likely be surprised at who will interview you.
