Hi all,

I am one of the growing unfortunates who failed their 1st attempt at CS. US MD degree, top half of the class, majority honors in clerkships, good step 1 and step 2 scores. I am now sitting on my fail and pass wondering if I should resend the scores to residency programs (on ERAS all programs will receive them) or maybe only sending the PDFs on an email to the programs that require a score before rank. I have heard varying opinions from residency PDs and the deans at my school, and want to see if SDN can maybe garner some more thoughts for me.

Any advice from PDs/APDs/anyone in the know would be very appreciated.

I wouldn't release it , programs that need it to rank you will prob not rank you because of the fail and programs that do not require it for ranking will prob end up dropping down or taking you off the list . What do you think was the biggest factor in you failing it ? Good luck

I can't say what the biggest factor in me failing was, I failed the CIS portion and when I passed the second time I actually thought I had a worse performance in that subject. Honestly I have never had any issues with communication, and the deans, OSCE directors, and PDs I have spoken to are just stunned that I failed.

It's a fluke. PDs will see that. They're idiots if they don't. You're a USMD in the top half of the class with honors in clerkships and good step 1 and step 2 scores. These other factors are much more important for ranking than a CS score.

I would say, selectively release it to programs that require it to rank. And don't stress out about it too much. I doubt it will affect your rank placement at all. CS is random. I have a friend who passed CS on his first try, but it didn't help his application at all since his Step 1 was a 197 and he was at the bottom of the class. Don't beat yourself up about it. You're done with that ridiculous exam once and for all.

honestly they probably just pick out a few random unfortunate test takers out of a lottery and say "ok yeah let's fail these people." there is ZERO transparency about the exam.
