guys, do you need a passing step 2 cs to start residency (or get a training license)? i checked a few hospitals and states and it seems that only step 1 is need for most American grads for their intern year. and then the remainder of the Steps for PGY-2 onwards.

has anyone not passed Step 2 CS and started intern year on time??

thanks
ultane

I got my trainging license without step 2 cs. becuase my school only required we sit for it for teh degree to be awarded. If your school will not give you your degree you likely will not be able to obtain your trainging license

If you check FREIDA it will say whether or not your program requires step 2 CS to start. However, I'm not sure how strict programs are about this (I passed and will be starting at a program that says it is required, but so far my program hasn't asked for any proof of my having passed).

My program didn't ask me for proof, but my school requires it to graduate...so I'm glad I passed. My state requires passing step 1, 2 CK and CS to get a training permit...but they don't check credentials (they rely on your program to do that). I already have my permit, though I don't graduate till next week. Frankly, its just a piece of paper until I have my degree and start residency on July 1st.

This will vary from place-to-place. Some schools require passing for graduation; some only require taking the exam. You will need to have passed it to get your training license in some states, and a lot of programs require passing it to get credentialed at their hospitals. Just ask your dean and/or future program director.

Resurrecting this thread because it's an important topic and it's difficult to find the eligibility criteria in most states' website. Some of the state languages are very vague when it comes to eligibility for a physician training license. They just say that you need from a US graduate from med school or have ECFMG certificate.
