USMLE Step 2 CS slots full

I really goofed and didn't register for Step 2 CS in time. There is not a single date available at any location until January, and my school requires it by December 31st. I signed up for a Jan spot for now, but do spots ever open up from cancellations or is that pretty uncommon? Are there any other options? Thanks

Sign up for the email alert for whenever a spot opens up. Spots start to open up about 2 weeks-1mo before the actual date because people decide to drop their dates for whatever reason. Be prepared to pay a lot for flights if you plan to take the test last minute.

Thanks for the reply. Do you know if spots opening up is somewhat common, or basically a shot in the dark?

In my case, I signed up for an alert at two different testing centers and got several emails each day. So yes, it was pretty common but keep in mind that everyone gets those emails. Spots were usually taken within a minute, so you would have to be pretty much sitting at your computer/phone when the email is sent.

posted this in a different thread but seems applicable here too: mozilla "check4change" is an extension that will automatically tell you/monitor pages for you and tell you for example if new test days open up. they surely will have slots that will open, it's going to be annoying, but i remember when i was trying to reschedule everything was booked up, i used this and found a test day in under 1 hr. don't pay someone yet... just be ready to take it, people drop exams <3 days away, cuz they get scared or whatever, so be ready and getter done when the opportunity (inevitably) arises.
