How important is having Step 2 CS in ranking candidates? The earliest date I could sign up for CS is on Dec 27th, and I know it takes about 3 months to get scores back. Will this be a problem with residencies ranking me?

I don't think so. I know some people who took it then and match fine. If you have a step 1 and step 2ck and then you put on ERAS "Will take" that's fine they assume you'll be one of the 99.9 that pass if your step 1 and step 2 are solid and you interview and all that. I think the step 1 is the heavy factor for an interview and I don't think absence of a CS would keep you out of interview at most/if any places.especially if your step one is good and they lke your LORs and personal statement and ERAS CV. If you fail the CS and or werent going to take it then the residency might get upset but I don't think you'll have a problem. Good luck!

thanks for the response. I already have Step 1 and 2CK in, CS was my only question

it's not going to affect your app at all. unless of course you constantly fail and can't pass MS4 yr....I am kidding. cs was a joke, don't sweat it. just show up sober and pass. that's about it.

My school was probably trying to scare us, but they stated that some programs won't rank you unless you have a passing score.

There is probably some truth to that because they don't want to deal with the off chance that you don't pass before you need to start.

I guess you would have to ask every program to get a true answer on a case by case basis.

I'd definitely ask about that since I've never heard of it. I honestly can't say during rank list we went back and looked at the ERAS statements to check if applicants passed or not. the database does get uploaded and compiled automatically and i am sure a red flag would appear if you failed. as a word of caution, don't take the CS so late that in case you do fail, you won't have time to take it again.

I heard this too. A few schools do this, but the vast majority don't. Still, I moved up my CS to avoid any later regret.

UCSF won't rank you unless you have a passing CS and CK.. not sure where else but I know there are at least a couple more

well shoot I applied there, but the earliest date for CS I could get was December, which means scores won't be back till about march...what should I do?

Reschedule?

I can't reschedule...the earliest date available when I signed up was in December. There's still nothing available when I checked a couple days ago

Fortunately most places don't require you passing step 2.

Otherwise keep checking?

I did some research for you:

http://www.emresidency.ucsf.edu/applicants/applicant-information

UCSF wants your scores by Feb 15.

http://www.usmle.org/examinations/step2/step2cs_reporting.html

"Over the past 4 years, results for 98%-99% of examinees who take the exam during the testing period were reported by the third Wednesday in a Reporting Period."

If you take the exam in December, looks like Feb 15th is the third Wednesday of your reporting period. Cuttin it mighty close!

Thanks for looking that up...I've been hearing it takes 3 months to get it back, but guess not. Anyways I'll still keep looking for earlier dates.
