Are there programs that won't send out invites until they see your step 2 score? Is this common? I'm between peds, psych, and OB at this point (all over the place I know!).

I'm trying to set up my fourth year schedule. My step 1 score was good (244). I'm not sure if I should allot time to study for and take step 2 in August/September, or if I should fill that time with AI's and aways and take Step 2 in November/December.

Check out FREIDA. You can also go to individual programs websites, where you might be able to find out specific requirements.

There were some programs that said step2 was required for interviews, but I still received invites without having step2.

You did well on step 1, and as long as you did reasonably well on your shelf exams, you won't have a problem doing well on step 2.

I think for Peds, a majority of programs don't need step 2 CK or CS for interview. BUT some do need both to rank. Therefore I'd suggest taking it latest Nov/Dec to make sure your scores will be there when they rank. (remember that CS scores take a long time (~2 months rather than just 1 for CK) to come back.)

Yeah, FREIDA definitely isn't gospel on this subject; a number of programs that say they need it to interview really just want it by ROL time. I think you'll be fine either way--I liked getting Step 2 out of the way in September so I didn't have to be distracted with interviews when I was studying for it, but if you need that time to get another letter or do an away then waiting until November or December shouldn't hurt you.

Meh. People take years off for a number of reasons (do research to become more competitive, get an MBA/MPH, medical problem, etc)

Don't mind him. I called him out on some of his bull**** two years ago, and he has been stalking me ever since. This is my first post in months, and voila, here he is. I wonder if you can get an online restraining order. Anyway, I did take a year off for family issues, but I don't think it will affect my application.

SDN Drama! Check out the ignore list -- it's your friend.

Regarding step 2, you definitely don't need it to get interviews at the majority of psych programs. There are some programs that require you to have completed both parts of Step 2 before ranking, though, but even that is pretty rare.

 I was just shocked to see you back after swearing off medicine and claiming it hurts more people than it helps. You didn't call me out on anything, but feel free to think so if it helps you out 👍 and.... only pursue this if you want everything dragged back up. Even though you have edited nearly every one of your posts to read "nm", plenty of people quoted you along the way. I am posting on topic here and just trying to figure out what exactly is going on with info that isn't adding up.

To answer your question: many people apply and interview without step2 being released. I don't know if match submissions or even match day ever happen prior to scores being released, so someone else will have to answer that. Most people, from what I have heard, apply without step2 on ERAS. Those who apply with it are usually those with less than competitive step1 scores and they want a strong step2 score on their app for PDs to see.
