Does anyone know if the military is paying for the PE exam that is now required as part of step 2?

They "haven't written a policy on that yet" according to a MS4 friend of mine.

This is copied directly from the Air Force HPSP website:

The following Board Examinations are approved for reimbursement:

-The National Board of Medical Examiners (USMLE) Parts I & II, and Clinical Skills Exam Component

-National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (COMLEX) Parts I & II

- Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (ADA), National Boards Parts I & II

-National Boards for Optometry, Parts II & III, and Clinical Skills Exam Component

Based upon the first part I would say YES!

It is my understanding that they pay for the test itself but not travel to the testing location or room and board while there.

I was just reimbursed for it, so yes, they pay for the exam. Not travel though.
