I'm taking step 2 CK the end of Sept (and CS in Nov.). First, will programs see this as a red flag that I delayed it (step 1 is 229)?

Secondly, what is the best option to mark as far as score release in ERAS...I'm scared to automatically release it in the event step 2 is lower....or will programs think its funny if I don't automatically release it and wait to see it first? Apparently this can't be changed once selected..... any help???? Thanks!

Taking Step 2 CK in September certainly doesn't sound like "delaying" it to me...I took mine in late December last year, and I had several classmates who took it even later (as late as February). And a lot of people I know took it in October-November. As far as I know we all had good Step 1 scores (as is yours). It didn't cause problems for any of us with our applications. So you should be absolutely fine with a September test date.

As for your second question...I honestly think the best option is to NOT automatically release your scores. I recall that my medical school specifically advised us to check the "no" box on the automatic score release question. It doesn't seem like programs really care at all...there is so much to scrutinize on the potentially hundreds or thousands of applications they get, why would they focus on this? (As long as there is nothing in your USMLE history to make them worry.)

Best of luck!
