So far what I've heard is that you can take it as early as you like and you can choose whether or not to submit the results when you make your application on SF Match.
1. Does that sound right?
2. When is the latest you can take it (can you take it in February, after the ophtho match?)?

Not one program asked me about my step 2 score. I took it after I submitted my application (in September-ish). I didn’t report it before the match, and so, yes you can definitely take it in February after the ophtho match!

My general rule of thumb is that if your score is 240-245+, take Step 2 September or later. As mentioned above by the previous poster, very few people (if any) will ask you about that score. If your score is under 240, I recommend taking Step 2 in June like the rest of your class does, right after MS3.

I was asking whether what I was saying was true logistically. What I've found is that yes we can submit step 1 first and then even if we take Step 2 before submitting the SF match, we have to option to choose whether or not we submit it. At least we can do this if we have the score report PDF with our Step 1 score. So you can take it in June or July and then decide whether you've done well enough to submit with your application in August.
