Hey yall, I heard that most fellowships just care if one passes Step 3. But I was wondering if any of yall know if the actual score matters. Were there any cutoffs that you were aware of? Or any percentiles one should aim for for something more competitive like pain peds & CT?

Thank yall!

Get a passing score. We look right over step scores and skip straight to ITE for fellowship applications. It's not clear to us what the relative scale is for Step 3 (the average score I think is higher than Step 1?), so it would be useless for us to have it factor in.

I know it's weird after so many years of taking tests where the score matters (from SAT, MCAT, Step 1/2), but honestly all anyone wants to see is a pass. You'll get a chance to show your smarts on the ITE.

I'm so glad I no longer have to deal with all these tests... The constant increased amounts of test taking and hoop jumping we're all forced to endure makes us too complacent in appeasing the work overlords (in all their various iterations). I wonder if this is wound into why doctors these days put up with being told what to do by all the non-doctors.

I so very much thank you for your insight. It is so good to hear and I will most certainly focus on ITEs then!!!

My understanding is that even the ITE is not as important as the steps were for residency... I'm sure there is some variability between programs, but I'd wager that the #1 factor is who you know (and who your letter writers know) as the fellowship trained community is smaller.
