Today I got my USMLE step 1 score back. I was so depressed, i only got a 256. I really wanted to get into a Plastics residency at Harvard and I just dont think I'm a strong enough candidate to get in! I mean I am AOA, but what's AOA when you're applying to Harvard. I've been dreaming of boobs and boob jobs since I was a kid. If I dont become a plastic surgeon from Harvard, my life is over! I think I am going to go cry now. Maybe i'll castrate myself.

Yeah, you don't have a snowball's chance in hell at Harvard plastics with anything less than a 310 on step I and #1 in your class. Too bad dude...get ready to scramble into some fourth-rate prelim IM program in rural North Dakota.

🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

My cup runneth over.

Tough luck, bro. Sometimes these things happen and it looks like you'll just have to come to grips with a simple fact:

You suck.

It's not the end of the world, some people just suck. For example, the people that did my dry cleaning this week suck. My traffic court lawyer sucks. Many of the department secretaries at my school suck. So cheer up, even though you're woefully inadequate, you're not alone. Maybe you can still serve society as a part-time janitor of a parking lot, or if that's too hard, you can always work as a department secretary at a medical school. That is, of course, only if you are passive-aggressive enough. Good luck and remember, "life doesn't suck, it's just you."

Try aiming for a 300+ on step 2....that will most likely get u in.

Wow. If you're not kidding, you sound like an absolutely delightful person. I concur with the castration.

If you don't mind me asking, I just starting 2nd year and wondered what are considered good USMLE scores and what are considered great scores for competitive residencies.

I couldn't tell how facetious the orginal post was- -

Hi there,
Anything above 230 is considered great for most specialties other than the most competitive ones. If you beat the mean (about 215) you are all right for things like Internal Medicine, Peds and Psychiatry.

You get one shot at USMLE Step I unless you fail. Your career is not over if you do not get the score you wanted. Just work hard on USMLE Step II and put Step I behind you. USMLE is not like MCAT and is more focused so study hard in your coursework and then review smart for USMLE.

Thanks, I apprecicate that! 🙂

Dont you take Step II at the end of 4th year??? Does this mean that if you do not get a good Step I score, you should then try and get a good Step II score???...but this would mean that you would be taking a year off in between...is this common?

Just wondering

As Step II focuses on the core rotations (medicine, surg, peds, ob/gyn, psych, neuro...), you can take it any time during your fourth year. So, some people do opt to take it early so it can be considered in their residency applications.

Hi there,
I took Step II at the very end of my third year (August). I wanted to get the test out of the way. Turned out that was a good decision. After the match, there was nothing between me and graduation except to show up and pick up my diploma. Taking the test early made fourth year a very cushy cruise; last one I have had since I am a General Surgery resident.

chillax....this post was a joke....to all the bastards out there who make annoying posts like this.

USMLE website says step II is scored purely pass/fail.

I think.

Someone wanna verify this? I could be reading it wrong because I hear people talking about step II scores all the time.

@Indryd...there are 2 step 2 scores. Clinical knowledge and clinical skills.

Clinical skills=Fail/Pass
Clinical knowledge= Figures
