Hi all,
I was wondering if there is anywhere that puts up the USMLE step one (or even step 2) scores up by school. Looking to compare programs based on how well the students do on average (though of course, i know it is in large part dependent on what you put into it yourself).
Thanks for your help,

Nope, that info typically isnt released. Doesnt make any difference anyway, just work hard.

i agree

at any school, SOMEONE will fail step 1, and SOMEONE will kick ass.
hopefully you'll be the latter🙂

Our school (University of Virginia) releases the Step I Scores break down each year. From what I saw on the web, (student affairs section, but you need to be on a campus computer to access this break down). The average score for my class (2005) was 227 +/- 20s (for 1 standard dev.) 30-33% of the class was >245, ~28% was in the 230-245 range, ~24% was in the 215-230 range, with the rest in the passing-215 (I say about 10% was from 200-215 and less than 3 people was in the 186-200 range), and about 2-3 people did not pass on the first try.

This breakdown has been pretty constant for the last few years. The classes above me all had an average of 225-228 (for the last 4 years) with at least over 25% of class above a 245 (in my class it was over 30%..... tons of gunners 😀 ) Hope this info helps a little. I think one of the reasons that our school have done well on Step I over the years has something to do with the grading system (A, A-, B+, B, B-,....) and our tough Basic Science years (very traditional, but changing). For the class of 2007 and beyond, the grading for UVA has been changed to pass/fail for the 1st 2 years. So it will be very interesting to see what the Step I breakdown will be for the group who have just took the exam (class of 2007).

if you call gunning for the top 20% "distinction" during basic sciences at uva a pass/fail system, then yes, uva is pass/fail. otherwise, it's just the good ol' boys at virginia scheming up another way to keep their school traditional in the guise of being progressive.

step I scores are the result of the students more so than any particular curricular aspect. hence why some kid from SGU can still score a 270 versus a Harvardian rockin' out to a 190. residency placement, however, is a totally different story.
