Hi Everyone, and good luck this season.

Straight to the point: I'm an US-citizen from a top Caribbean school applying to match in EM this year. While I haven't received any interview offers yet, I also haven't received any rejection notices. My question is this: I just got my STEP-2 CK scores today, and dropped from a Step 1 score of 248/99 to 228/94. How much does the community think this will adversely affect my ability to be granted interviews?

As for the exam: I felt it was more difficult because it was so looong. Even though they cut the number of questions per block by four, the stems (and even the answer choices) required a much longer time to sort through.

Thanks for the feedback in advance.

Simple. Don't release your Step 2 scores, yet.

Yeah.. def don't release that step 2 score, let that 248 work for you!

good luck

As a former program director, I would give you the opposite advice of the others. There's nothing wrong with a 94. However if you don't release the number, PDs are going to suspect it's much worse. We can see that you've taken the test from your ERAS.

an opinion from a resident involved in reviewing applications...

yes your score dropped. but, by stepping out so big on your step I, there isn't really a lot of room to go upwards anyway. your step II score, although lower by a decent chunk, is still higher than most applicant's scores would be.

as with the entire med school and match process...i offer the following advice. don't microanalyze every single aspect of your application. don't stress. stay above the anxiety and the hysteria. enjoy the ride. seems like you handled your business. things will likely play out in your favor.

i applied to a bunch of places my year. my apps were in on day 1. i gave myself until thanksgiving to see what came back in terms of offers and then i re-evaluated where i stood. its mid-october. even if interviews have offered, i don't know of too many places (or any places) that are already conducting interviews on a large scale.

cool out. if by december 1 you don't have interview offers, then i'd start buggin out a bit.

wow 248 and no EM invites? that scares me.. i'm from SGu and want to do EM

UPDATE: Two invites so far. 2 LORS uploaded today. 1 SLOR being received by ERAS as we speak. I just hope I'm not too late to score more invites as places that I'm interested in. No "red flags" in my file except being an American that went to a Carib. med school.

Just a thought: When programs post deadlines like "Dec. 31st" or "Jan 31st", it makes you think that you can schedule an EM rotation in late Oct-Early Nov (I start one next week) and be right on-schedule. Then you find out the truth. A bit misleading, if you ask me.
