Hi,
(Keep in mind I live in Canada)
I'm a newly graduated high school student. I'm enrolled in community college taking courses that have nothing to do with medicine. This is my big problem seeing as how that's what I want to be in. I wasn't offered all the night courses in my last years of high school to qualify for any medical courses in college, nor did I have the guidance from a school councilor to direct me after high school. My questions are:

1) I don't have grade 12 bio or chem, If I took clinical chem in college would that make up for missing high school chem? Or do I need to find a way to take it.

2) There are so many years of med. school, which is thrilling, but I have no idea where to start of what I'm exactly looking to apply for.

3) Can someone please possibly give me a step by step 'you should do this this and this to apply for this and to get into this' type help.

Any replies or help are very much appreciated

The first thing you should worry about is getting into an 4 year school. You have a couple years before you need to start worrying about getting your AMCAS in on time. I am not sure how Canadian schools work, but i wouldnt take any pre-med requirements in community college. Just get into a 4 year school and take things one step at a time

I don't think course selection matters nearly as much as simply doing well in whatever you choose to go with.

1) My feeling is there is nothing wrong with taking your first chemistry course either in community college or at university. Chemistry is a tough class, so take it whenever you feel you're ready for it. The majority of pre-meds finish chemistry sometime during their 1st two years of undergrad (simply because many are science majors and chemistry is a pre-requisite they must pass in order to take other advanced science courses). Same deal with biology.

2) You should be doing this on your own. I think one place you could start with is by reading through the various specialty forums in SDN. There are often FAQ threads that address many of the questions you may have about any given field in medicine.

3) Like #2. There is no one right or wrong way to get to your objective. The only universal truth I can think of is... whatever direction you choose to go in at this point, always focus on doing as well as possible academically. Everything else will pretty much fall in line for you.
