Grew up in NJ.

Go to college in NYC. Have no intention of ever going back to NJ for an extended period of time. Too much coke in this NYC air.... cannot leave it. Besides, parents love any excuse to cross the GW.

Grandparents live in NYC. I changed my permanent address to their apartment in October 09 for a few reasons:
1. I never go back to NJ and it's stupid to have mail sent there.
2. I spend my non-academic time at this apartment.
3. Free academic housing for next year? Hello?
4. My family is hoping to get my name on the lease, which I believe requires at least a year of living there (so... Oct '10). My grandparents, unfortunately, do not have much time left, and no one wants to lose the apartment. It's on 5th Ave, for crying out loud.

NY "permanent residence", NY driver's license, NY voter. Still financially dependent on my stuck-in-NJ parents.

Applying this upcoming cycle. Have I screwed myself over for NJ and NY state schools?

Residency laws vary by state. Some states require that you live there for 1 year, some require 5, some require that you graduated HS there, etc. Your best bet is to look on the website for the state schools in NY and NJ and see what their requirements are. If you can't find any info, contact them directly. You will only be able to declare yourself a resident of one state on AMCAS, so it's better to figure this out before you're planning on submitting your application.

FWIW, most states won't consider you a resident if you lived there while in school, even if your name was on a lease.
