i will be applying this summer to enter med school (i hope) in the fall of 2011. my live-in boyfriend will also be applying this summer to enter a residency program in the fall of 2011. has anyone else had this particular situation? any suggestions for trying to get in at the same place, or at least the same area?

i'm a non-trad (27 yrs old, BA in anthropology '05, 2 years teaching english in Spain, 2 years working in the international dept of a children's hospital, half way through my MPH, working on pre-reqs, plan to take MCAT in May 2010). he's a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist from outside of the U.S., 31 yrs old, currently doing research at the hospital where i work while going through the USMLE process.

thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I would be shooting for the metropolitan areas with several med schools.
The matching process can be very grueling from what I've heard... It might be easier for him to find a residency and then you can look for schools close by.

Another thing to keep in mind is that doctors that have received their training overseas have a harder time with residencies since the slots allocated to them are much fewer. I had a friend who had a REALLY hard time getting into a FM residency program in a rural setting. She had great scores but it was just really hard for her.

Another thing to consider is the American residency status (foreign national, permanent resident, American citizen). Some program will NOT take international students. And to my friend's demise her FM program did NOT accept internationals... So much work and in the end she ended up losing her spot =(

Good luck!

There is no guarantee that he will even be accepted to X or Y residency so I would pursue your dream and apply broadly and then he can try to match in those areas.

Just apply to as many schools as you can in the same area. He'll know where he matched before you have to make a final decision about a school. In some of the major metro areas there are multiple schools/res programs. As long as you can live together or be close, things should be okay.

Both of the processes have so much to chance that you really just have to apply as broadly as possible.

Tough situation.

I dont know if this help at all but my girlfriend and I will likely be in the very same situation. I gave her a list of 20-25 programs to apply to (see states where it is easy to get residency - provided you get married before applying) and I will wait another year and apply during her intern year - 2011.

Apply to places where there are a few schools within a 2 hour driving distance.

Good Luck.
