hey everyone..im still a high school student and i would really like ur help. i was wondering if there is any school other than berekeley that is optometry in california. and im preparring to take SATs adn should i take classes for it??? i saw a thread that asked if it was useful and most people said it was but is it really neccessary..or can u just study what i need major work on at home???

There are actually two optometry schools that I know of in California. They are Southern College of Optometry and University of California, Berkeley. You can find additional information on www.opted.org

As for the SAT's...(graduating college senior, so I don't know much about the new format) I studied on my own. The additional SAT class definitely won't hurt, but you have to consider how much it is going to help you. Some people benefit more than others when taking those type of classes.

There is also SCCO in Southern California. (Fullerton I think... but not sure!) I'm not sure if you are talking about the SAT or OAT... most people on this forum where probably talking about the Kaplan prep course for the OAT... that is the Optometry Admission Test. As far as the SAT goes, I never did do anything to study for it and I did fine. Perhaps you should just buy a SAT prep book at Barnes and Noble or just review your class notes at home. Also, be careful.. don't confuse the SAT with the OAT. The SAT is optional for optometry schools, some don't even care if you wrote it and won't ask you if you did. Although the SAT isn't really important to optometry schools (NECO and PCO needed me to send my SAT scores to them)...it is important in obtaining a position in most, if not all, undergrad universities...

OAT (Optometry Admissions Test) is then taken prior to admission to optometry school.

Lets break this done since we are just throwing test names out their.

SAT or ACT: these are required to enter almost any US accredited university or college. As you know, you need to take it while in high school so you can get your undergraduate degree.

You do not have to attend an undergraduate school that has an optometry school in order to go into optometry. You can go to ANY college/universtiy and get your bachelors degree. Then you apply to optometry school. For example, you can go to UCLA and get a degree in molecular biology and then go to Berkley for your doctor of optometry degree.

As you get to your junior or senior year of college (not HS) you will take the OAT. The OAT is required for all optometry schools. Don't worry about the OAT at this point, it is years away for you.

I'm sure you know all this, but I just wanted to clear somethings up.

Now, to your original question...do you need a prep-course? Maybe...

You can take a pre-SAT test and see how you do. If you score well, don't bother with a prep-course. If your score is not where you want it, take one. Look at the schools you want to go to. There are many college guides that will tell you what the entering class's GPA and SAT/ACT scores are. If your pre-test score is not up to par, take the test.
