OhMr.Greenfeld!

I'm sure many of you have had to decide what choice of career you want between being a doctor or and engineer, law, etc...

So basically for me its coming down to medicine or dentistry... Im still deciding whats more important to me (lol, i'm 'bout to get philosophical).. I personally feel i can make more money in dentistry but i'm not sure if i want to give up the whole "MD" thing for it (because i like it too).. .I brought my GPA up to 3.7 so i can leave my options available, so to speak...

So here are my plans:

I plan on taking the DAT this August and then the MCAT this April. I havent had physics yet, so i was adivsed to hold off on the MCAT.

So my questions are:

Will an older edition of the big Kaplan book do okay for the MCAT?

Any opinions from others in a similar situation?

And the last one:

Guess where i got my username from?

Looks like you are trying to make a big decision on a whim. I'd recommend stepping back and thinking more about what you really want to do

This is definetly NOT on a whim, i have been deciding on this for quite some time and the more i shadow people the more confused i get...I like both for different reasons...

To answer your initial question:

Any book within 3-4 years of print is suitable for MCAT preparation, assuming its from ExamKrackers(sp?) or Kaplan. The material doesn't change that much. This year's current MCAT and the next one will have 2-3 more genetics problems on them. No biggie though really.

As for MD or DDS/DMD, the degree doesn't really matter. That would be the least of my concerns. Its the job you do 40-50 hours a week, for like 30+ years, that I'd spend more time thinking about. Do you think senators think about which degree to get while knowing that they want to go into politics someday? No.. They get whatever sounds interesting to them and then they spend a great deal of time involving themselves in their work and in politics. Long story short: If you want to spend your life in peoples mouths: DDS/DMD, if you want to spend your life in peoples a-holes, MD.

Cheers!

(P.S. I know MDs do other things that a-holes, but it seemed to fit my statement 🙂 )

Obviously the careers are very similar and that is why you are having trouble deciding.

I think of a dentist as a surgeon who has to operate on people while they are awake! 🙂
