For those that don't remember, I can't decide between anesthesia and another residency. I was wondering if anyone has heard of people applying to more than one residency; even at the same hospital. At least I could see certain programs and decide where I might be happiest for the next 4-?? years of my life if I can't still decide.
Also, are there quality programs out there that keep spots open for those that decide to transfer into Gas after doing a prelim year?
Thanks in advance.

You still have time to decide on a specialty. Do an anesthesia rotation as soon as possible, but no later than September. If you want to land a good residency anywhere, you're going to have to demonstrate sincere interest in the field. You certainly can apply to more than one specialty, but residency directors may find out, and that would hurt your chances. I was asked flat out by the chairman at NYU whether I was applying to any other specialties. One great thing about going the anesthesia route is you can do either a medicine or surgery prelim year, that way if you change your mind about anesthesia, you could potentially get out of your contract and pursue another field. Anesthesiology is an AMAZING field for the right person, it's worth finding out as soon as possible if it would work for you.
