Stony Brook dorming... and help with transfer.

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi everyone,

So I applied to Stony Brook University for the Spring 2012 semester as a transfer student from CUNY- Borough of Manhattan Community College. I will be graduating with my Associates degree in Liberal Arts. Unfortunately Stony Brook reached capacity for the Spring 2012 semester and I probably have no choice but to re-apply for Fall 2012.

If you have gone to Stony Brook and dormed, how do they match up pairs for rooming? is their a questionnaire involved? How is dorming life? Do you like it or wish to be back home, instead.

Furthermore for everyone to answer, since I will not be at Stony Brook for the Spring, I must go somewhere else. My choices are...

a) NYIT- New York Institute of Technology
b) Touro College
c) CUNY- City College
d) CUNY- Baruch College

Where should I go for a semester, keep in mind I have to take MCAT pre-reqs as well.
Thanks for your help, looking forward to your replies.

"Dorming" blows. Get ready to be paired with a freshman student in a space the size of a master bathroom. Its very expensive and offers NO privacy. If your lucky you'll get a roommate who is considerate and cool, but its a lottery -- you could just as likely end up with the stoner or goth student. I have no knowledge to assist you on which college choice to chose of those mentioned. Best of luck.

If you're a transfer student, they match you up randomly with freshmen or upperlcassmen. Yes, there is a questionnaire and you will be matched to a residential quad based on your answers. For the most part if you're a party type of person then roosevelt and kelly quads will be suitable but bear in mind that you will barely get an studying done there. Kelly, roosevelt, roth are all suite style dorms with a common room for every suite. Mendelsohn and H-quad are corridor and are more quiet and usually offer a better environment to study.

Dorming life is what you make of it honestly at Stony Brook and a little but of luck is involved. If you're paired with the right people then its awesome, if not then it kinda blows. Personally, I love dorming there I know most of the people in my hall and we usually have a great time together and even conduct study sessions. I come back home every now and then on the weekends since I only live an hour and half away and campus can be pretty dead on the weekends.

Oh and another thing, Stony Brook is a very challenging school for the sciences especially if you're on the pre med track I'm assuming. Some of the professors are great but alot of them lack in teaching skills otherwise and the curves in large pre-req classes aren't very generous either.

Hope this helped.

Minor correction. Only 1 out of the 5 buildings in Roosevelt are Suite style. The rest are all corridor.

What are the differences between suite style and corridor buildings?

Suite Style: When your in the hall way and open the door to your suite you will typically see a couple of rooms (usually 3) that house 1-3 students in each. There is also a common space, such as a lounge that is usually in the center of the room that has the smaller personal rooms branching off it. There is usually also a bathroom within your suite for you to share with your suite mates. This bathroom is usually cleaned on a weekly basis.

Corridor Style: When your in the hall way and open the door you will see 3 walls that have can have 1-2 windows depending on whether or not it is a single room (meant for 1) or a double room (meant for 2 but can house 3 through the use of a bunk bed and a single bed). Thats it. That will be your room and if you are in a double or triple you will share it with your roommates. You will not have your own personal bathroom. Instead you will have around 2 bathrooms per hall that you end up sharing with your hall (around 30-40 residents). These bathrooms are cleaned on a daily basis.

lazyindy pretty much said everything you really need to know. If you're a transfer student and chose to live in mendy or h-quad, then you'll probably be paired with another transfer student/upper classmate. And they give you questionnaires to fill out when choosing the dorms. Regarding the dorm lifestyle, it's really how you make of it. It can be a depressing place if you don't make any effort to enjoy the college life. I live in the city and it's rare I come home. There's a lot of commuter and city kids so the weekend life is pretty much dead, which doesn't contribute to the student life.

And if you're pre-med, well good luck with that. The science classes are pretty tough and the professor really don't care who you are. So don't take the classes lightly. And for the cunys, go where you'll enjoy learning. It really doesn't matter.

When you say "professors really dont care who you are," are you referring to SBU environment, or just in general. The only only reason I don't want to go to CUNY is because they demand way too much and honestly students get so stressed out that they start hating science when in fact they use to love it because CUNY makes it impossible to get good grades while also still keeping the interest of students. Especially CCNY, and Hunter College. They go around competing against Columbia and others alike to maintain a good academic standing but in reality are only losing talent because of strictly looking at tests and numbers. Yes that does matter however if you have a student who is rich in extra curricula, volunteering, research, who is just an average student he/she isn't even looked at till they first examine scores which sucks because they start beating you up way before you even grow the balls to apply to med-school... =/

Sorry i get worked up because I along with a few that I know hate the CUNY system and its attempt to marginalize science students. Anyhow I am looking towards Touro College more so. I have sat in on classes and professors are rly nice, helpful, and patient. I was about to enroll with NYIT, but it is basically Touro but with higher tuition cost. then after Spring & Summer there I plan to hopefully get my acceptance to SBU. If I get stuck in the "partying" dorms then I will commute to school, lets hope I get to go to school only 3 days a week which will make commuting easier.
