Yeah, the "basic questions" ..research (if you have it), what do you want to do with your dental career, any volunteering/service. they know your file pretty well too. i got asked what book i was currently reading b/c i did well on the RC and i'm a comp lit minor... so he asked if i liked reading and what book i was reading right now. he also asked me if a mac or pc was better b/c one of my work-study jobs involved fixing computers. so stuff like that. good luck!

Do you guys mind telling me what kind of stats you had to get an interview there? I'm planning on applying next year after I take the pre-requisite courses. I'm planning a bit of a career change so I have to take bio, chem, etc. So what kind of GPA did you have? What was your major? How did you do on the DAT? Any dental experience?

for those who got interviews, when were your applications considered completed? I submitted the application at the beginning of june but mine's completed at the end of august. I haven't heard anything from them yet.

Thanks Wigglytooth for all the info !!! It's my first interview since I took my DAT in sept .. But I am very excited .. alright gluck with everythin !!

Dkny2kx gluck with your interview .. Please keep me posted after thank you

They will call you for an interview invitation .. my appl was completed in late oct since i took my test in sept .. n got a call last week

thanks mike. i am instate too. Looks like I've been unofficially waitlisted for an interview. does anyone know if they process applications in the order in which they were received?

also, I called stony brook and they told me that they send invitation by snail mail though. Do they send you an email besides a phone call? i mean not everyone has an answering machine or a cell phone.

Mine was complete in July and I got an invite around mid-October. Patricia called me and left a voice-mail and we played phone tag for a bit before actually scheduling the interview. Then she sent me an official e-mail invite, which I had to confirm. I never got anything in snail-mail.

i second this question. mine's been complete since the beginning of oct and i haven't heard anything. also, do they give pref for in-state residence?

Wigglytooth !! few more questions for you ... how long was your interview? and did they ask you to explain any parts of the application like bad grade in some class or something like that?

First of all, to the other poster... Stony Brook gives major preference to in-state residents. Very few (<5) out of staters are usually in the class. The class size is really small to begin with, so it's really super-competitive to get into on top of that if you are from out of state. And yes, get dental experience. Not just for admissions sake, either... you need to see if the field is for you!

And now, Mike... the interviews are about 30 mins give or take. I wasn't asked specifically about any bad parts of my application. He was kind of thinking aloud about my grades.. like... "well did well on your DAT, and you went to a good school and managed to get only one C..." I took that as an opportunity to talk about that, so I did. I didn't really have a reason, but I told him that I at least tried hard in the class. Just be able to talk about all aspects of your application and your interests both in dentistry and in life in general (hobbies, non-dental EC's). I think that goes for any other interview you go on as well. :luck:

dkny !! how did your interview go??

Did anyone here interview yesterday (Thurs Nov 8)? They closed the learning center all day so it sounded like it was some big interview thing they were doing, as opposed to the usual group of 4-6.

Yeah I interviewed there Nov 8, and they had about a group of 12 people total

i'm interviewing on the 17th. in looking over the material in the interview feedback, it seemed that they asked some questions about insurance and the current situation for dentistry. is this a frequent question or do you think it was more tailored to the person's file, as someone said earlier? does anyone else have some input about what to expect? group, one on one? how stressful is the interview? i'm a bit anxious about it b/c it's my first one.

what are the odds of getting in after getting an interview, assuming you don't botch the interview? how many people do they interview on average, esp out-of-state? i was trying to get data on this but was unsuccessful.

for the first round, they told us 50% of interviewees get accepted.......it wouldnt hurt to brush up on your american healthcare knowledge for the interview

My interview there was so relaxing I forgot I was being interviewed. Seriously, you have nothing to worry about. Just talk and feel confident in yourself. I dunno how to describe it but I talk in a way to allow my personality to drip off each word I say.

It's a relatively stress-free one-on-one interview. Most interviewers at SB hold it as more of a conversation. Some like to ask about research, some about current healthcare issues, and most just ask "why stonybrook?" Really they're trying to get to know you outside of your written application. Don't be too nervous and just be yourself.

according to http://www.adea.org/Resources/OG/OG_3_WhereToApply.pdf, the number of those accepted equals the number of those who attend. it certainly would be a bit disheartening to have less than a 10% of getting an acceptance. i think someone must not have accurately reported the number of those accepted. correct me if i'm wrong.
