Sorry guys who had your hopes up. I just came back from an interview today at Stony Brook and found out the school is actually overbooked to 48 students when they only have room for 39 (yet they are still doing interviews because they don't want to tell anyone about it). So basically there isn't much hope for that anymore...

i think i might be rejecting Stony Brook next month... we'll see though

If that's true than that's absolute BS. People pay money to travel, rent hotel rooms and such, and if it's all for nothing than that's just sad.

It's completely true. I found out later when my father picked me up and basically felt like I wasted a day of my life. I knew something was odd too since everyone kept emphasizing that they can't give status updates. Also everyone interviewing us seemed kinda miserable like "why the hell are we still doing this when we can't let anyone else in anyway." Oh and to clear it up, 48 people have SENT IN their deposit, it's not just acceptance letters that the school sent out. 48 people have accepted their offer and the dean is freaking out because he doesn't know what to do.

It's crazy but this happens. Happened to me last cycle at Case....flew half way across the US to interview and was told point blank that they were out of seats. Trudged back to my hotel in the snow....never felt so defeated in my life. I even wrote the dean a personal letter about the troubles they caused me, never got a response back 😡😡

That happened to my at Tufts last year too. I interviewed in Feb. and they pretty much told us we were all interviewing for a spot on the waitlist.

hmm, maybe I shouldn't have dual deposited at Stony as a backup.

Wow! This early. 😱
There still is an outside shot. People can pull their deposits or go somewhere else instead. Good thing I didn't bother applying to StonyBrook.

so maybe a stupid question.. but what does stonybrook do now

can they really tell applicants who accepted their offer that they can't come? wouldn't this be especially bad since the jan 14th deadline for the other nov 30 acceptances just passed, so people who gave up other offers to go to stonybrook don't have any options

i believe when this happens they offer some individuals the option to take a year off and guarentee them a spot in the following years class.

wow, going through all the bs, getting excited and ready to go somewhere, and then getting told that

I'm a resident at SB, and have also heard that what the OP says is true. This isn't unprecedented, it's happened at other schools. They typically do honor the admissions, but ask some students to take a year off and then come back. Sometimes they also give them a tuition discount. I'm not saying that is what SB will do, but these things have happened before.

Aw man, this is not good news.:scared:

You think if it comes to this that they will draw students at random?

This is often the case yearly at many schools, and what ends up happening is people who have sent in deposits very often have sent in multiple deposits and have not decided where they will attend yet. They wont know the true picture until the first day of orientation when everyone who will actually be in the class of 2012 shows up ready to go. Usually around April-May they have a decent idea whether they will have an overbooking problem and will start making some decisions.

Columbia Med school got themselves into some trouble several years ago by over-accepting close to 20 students. They offered the option to the class to wait until the following year and they would be granted automatic admission and their first year would be tuition free. Costly mistake on their part!

No matter how you look at it it's still a bummer.

I doubt that many people will opt to take a year off just so that can have a guaranteed spot at SB for next year. They'll probably go to some other university.

They're keeping it quiet? I would think they'd tell as many people as possible so they can accept a position at another university?

What a bummer. 🙁

I was hoping to find out maybe this month. But I guess not. MaybeI should just stop hoping.

Hey WiredNerv, would you wait for another year if SB decides to make the first year free?
If that were the circumstance than I would have no other option. I only put down one deposit, oh how foolish I was! Alas, I am hoping for the best.

wirednerv, I wouldn't get upset. If you don't want to wait a year they can't MAKE you. It's the schools fault and they have entered a binding contract with you. If you want to go this year then you go.

Yay Mario Frustration! You jump on the block here and hit the bloop and AHHH F**K!

lol, owned!

You see when the Colts fans booed the 13 year old girl with the patriots jersey?

You know, though I feel bad for that girl, fans in Indy are way more civil than Boston fans. Fans at Foxborough and at Fenway are far, far worse to opposing team supporters. My fiance is a huge Yankees fan, and she had a cup of cola thrown at her (which hit me by the way) because she got up and cheered when A-rod smacked a homer.

But back to Stony Brook - that sucks. It's a great school, and too bad they overbooked. One of the largest appeals of the school to me, was a smaller class size. Just seems that some of those who were accepted are going to hit by the other portion of that double edged sword. Doesn't matter in my case anyhow, because I wasn't given a chance to interview there.

Does your dad know the dean personally? I mean if it is not a publicly known fact, meaning they sent out formal letters or let the students who have interviewed but have not been accepted know the situation.

If it is true and the school does not notify applicants, that's really unprofessional.

No it's not.

I think chemiguy is referring to the fact that the school isn't notifying applicants but told a parent waiting in the caf. Which I agree is not professional.
