Stony Brook is my top choice, and I have two questions 🙂

1. I know there are definitely pros and cons for the small class size- Can someone elaborate some details what they are?

2. Do students commute? Or pretty much everyone lives on campus or nearby? (Commute from Bayside, Queens)

Thank you very much for your time, and hope you guys kill the final exams!

Small class sizes can be a pro or a con. If you get along with everyone then it can be an excellent experience. Student to faculty ratio tends to be pretty good as well. If on the other hand you manage to make enemies or have any malcontent whatsoever, it will be unbearable. Socially, you will have a less diverse experience so that is also a con.

As for your second point, you really need to go over the geography of Long Island and New York City. Bayside (in queens), and Queens are not within commuting distance of Stony Brook.

I agree with Ace of Spades on the pros and cons. I am really liking our class at SB right now and everyone is generally fabulous and on the same page. The class above us reportedly had their issues but that is their class. It's a mixed bag on who's going to be in your class and how you're going to react to certain things. Sometimes I wish there were more people to meet, but to be honest, most people are doing their own thing (bf/gf/family/nondental friends) and there is never a dull moment! There is plenty of time to bond since we see each other all the time anyway.

Bayside is about a hour and change commute, my friend. Unless you have family that will be hard to transplant closer to SB (ie an S/O that works close to the city plus kids), I strongly recommend living 10-15 mins away if not closer. A friend that lives in Huntington has to wake up at 5:30 so he can make class at 8am, and it is about a 45 min commute. I used to commute about a half hour and that took a toll on me too. The minute I moved 10 mins away, a great weight was lifted off my shoulders. There are some people who do it (from Brooklyn even), but that is because of their family situations. If you want to try to live from home just to save a few bucks, by all means try it, but if nothing is keeping you there per se, I would really take up residence much closer.

lol, commuting to stonybrook from queens made me chuckle out loud. that's crazy.

Most of the girls in Stony Brook seem to be very much into studying and gunning hard.

Well, my interviewer told me that there are quite a number of students commuting from brooklyn or queens. Don't know how true it is tho because I think it is crazy too (1. too far 2. crazy traffic congestion)
