This is kind of interesting...during my CSPM (california) interview I was told by one of the attendings that SUNY Stony Brook on Long Island opened a pod school in the 1970's. Right now it is a large research university with both medical and dental schools. Anywho, the students back then completed 2 years of basic science but then the school was closed down due to being cited for academic deficiencies/problems. It was a big problem of course because the students had to transfer elsewhere to finish their education. Kind of crazy if you ask me

I'd never heard about that, but I don't doubt it. Podiatry was trying to grow at that time, and that was shortly before DMU and Barry opened up.

That's the chance you take when you go to a program that's not accredited or on probation... you might have to transfer or start all over if the program bottoms out. That's true both for grad schools or for residencies, so you always want to do your homework.
