I thought I mind as well ask before I decide. I am a NY resident.

So, which one would you attend Stony Brook or UConn and Why?

They are very similar since both are state schools so I wanted other perspectives before I decide.

Thanks! 🙂

SB since cheaper?

They are both around the same price. Stony Brook would be like $9,000 cheaper the first year and the same every year after because I would become a CT resident.

Hmm, I thought OOS tuition at UConn is 2X? Sorry if I got that wrong since I didn't interview there, lol.

I thought so too before I went. After one year you become a CT resident. Thanks for your input. On a sidenote, are you going to go to NYU? I still need to think about everyhting but state schools are significantly cheaper.

Yea, I think I'm gona stick with nyu so I could cut down the living expense at least. No love from UB and SB, lol. Well, cost is not an issue so long as I get in somewhere...

If cost isn't a problem for you, then stick with the one you love the most I guess.

There were two things that really sold me on UConn. First was the cost, but it appears that since your costs will be fairly similar, that's not too much of a factor anymore. Second what the P/F grading system (as advised by my sister who is a physician). It can get really brutal sometimes when rank can make/break your future dreams should you or your classmates decide to specialize. Congrats on your acceptances BTW! 👍

+1. I'd love to go to UConn, had UCSF not existed. Stony Brook is like any other dental school; there's just not much that differentiates it from other generic state schools. UConn on the other hand 1) provides you with a medical education for the first two years which is especially useful if you plan on applying to OMFS residencies and taking the CBSE, 2) offers in-state tuition after the first year, and 3) offers P/F curriculum (ask any medical student and they'll agree that they would rather choose a P/F school over traditional grading school because it reduces stress significantly).

At Stony Brook students take the same basic sciences with med students so they get a med background. I was told that students were not ranked there either on my interview. Both have small class sizes.. My 4th year student interviewer told me she has never heard of anyone who didn't get into a specific specialty that they wanted. You should pick based on where you think you'd be happier.

Thanks for your responses. I am still torn between which one I should attend. I am going to try to decide after finals week after the offical letters come in the mail. I may revisit the schools too.

I know the P/F at UConn sounds awesome and Stony Brook said they ae pass/fail for some classes. I mean they are both state schools and are both pretty affordable.

Ugh I hate making these kind of life-altering decisions. lol

I'm going to assume you live in Queens from your name lol...
I would definitely choose SBU over UConn IMO. Both are great schools, but for me at least being closer to home is always a positive. My UConn acceptance was awesome but I am defintly bummed out about not hearing from SBU. GL with your decision.

I am sure you will! Everyone who gave us the tour when I was at Stony Brook was wait listed initially, which I thought was odd.

I know, my mom can travel 50 minutes and do my laundry if I go to SB.😀

Initially, I thought UConn all the way, but reality sets in and I may miss my friends/family.

You'll make new friends. Why not get out of your comfort zone and moving a little farther away from home?

Being that New York is your home, you're a state resident of New York, SB is a state school, all of your friends and family are in New York, AND Stony Brook is an awesome school, I'd go to Stony Brook.

Maybe you shouldn't be giving advice here considering how you're on the wait-list at UConn. 😀

A partial interest maybe?

Haha. No. I just know that if I had a state school that I got into, I'd most likely attend it. I think a lot of people have a desire to stick around in the area they know, stay around family and friends, etc.

However I don't have a state school, so staying in the area for me means saddling up and paying private school tuition which scares the hell out of me. So a lot of people like me pray to get into a state school to save themselves down the road. That's why I'm hoping for a place like UConn or buffalo where you can get state tuition.

If this were possible to do in the state I live in and love, it would be a no brainer for me. But that's just my opinion!

I don't even see a problem whith that lol....hmmm. On second thought qnz goto UConn. Maybe that'll open up a spot for me at stonybrook ....jk

Baker was right! There are a bunch of sabotagers on SDN jpjp. 😀

It's okay, at least we are all in somewhere this cycle.

I have until the 1st to open a spot up for someone. I still don't know what I am going to do.

Similar question, i recieved acceptance to NYU and UCONN yesterday. At first I was UConn all the way but I like the idea of larger class size and also living in NYC. I am from boston tho so NYU will be much more expensive. Any suggestions??

UConn is much cheaper. You get the same degree regardless of where you go. We have a month. This is the biggest decision of our lives. I also got into NYU, so its not entirely out of the running as well. GL

qnzbabi-I think you should ignore everybody on SDN when they give you suggestions on which school to choose. Everyone has an agenda such as whether they're on the waitlist or they have a friend on the waitlist. Heck, I'm in at UConn and I'm probably going but part of me wants to see you go to Stony Brook. With a 4.0 and 25RC, you're bound to be a contender for the top of your class and stiffen the competition wherever you go. 😀

You have a month to decide so take your time. Find out all the information you can about both schools. Talk to students. You have the greatest holiday gift a predent could have: a choice... between two of the best dental schools in the country. Enjoy it.

Thanks Zbtb7. I appreciate your insight. 👍

Yes, I know! I am blessed to have offers from two schools with highly personable deans. Stonybrook's dean was great plus he gave me a phone call. It was very nice of UConn's dean to give you a thorough explanation, but I wish you could have been my potential classmate!

i think you should definitely ignore everyone on SDN hahaha. I also got into stonybrook and i didnt apply to uconn so NO HIDDEN AGENDA HERE but you should definitely go with whatever makes you happiest. like you said something like uconn made you feel happy, then consider that. since they are about the same price just go with whichever YOU think YOU would like best hahaha not the people on sdn (i actually hate this site)

good luck with your decision!

hahaha! We hate it, yet we are addicted to it. Well, at least I am.

its like Walter White of Breaking Bad addicted to making meth. He hates doing it but cant stop.

STONY BROOK all the way! That school is prestigious as hell...UCONN just doesn't have the same ring!

I'd always go with your state school over another state's state school.

9k, if you are borrowing, will turn out to be more than 9k. Besides the money, there is the camaraderie question. Idk..I'd feel a little left out if people are dishing about what corner of CT they are from and I am sitting there all 😕

I'm a current D1 at UConn Dental, and it's definitely hard (but so is every dental school!), but I absolutely love it! If you have any specific questions that my classmates haven't already answered on this thread, let me know!

How can you call Stony Brook a "generic state school" when Stony brook basically has everything you listed uconn has that makes uconn 'special" (also whats wrong with being a generic state school...or ANY dental school for that matter...they all make dentists)?

1) Stony brook DOES provide you with a medical education just like uconn (1+1/2year with the med school ON TOP of dental classes).
2) Stony Brook ALSO offers in-state tuition after first year (so does buffalo the other NY school)
3) Some of Stony's classes ARE p/f....and students are not ranked nor is your GPA given out to residency programs.

While Uconn (from my memory from interviews two years ago)...takes longer medical classes (for two years over stony's 1.5) Stony Brook introduces you to patient contact (taking medical histories/screening patients etc) first year and you start seeing patients october of your second year (With your own designated chairs/bays every time you go into clinic...no problem fighting for a chair so far). I believe Uconn you see patients end of 2nd year or start of 3rd (correct me if I am wrong). Do you want more medical curriculum or more clinic? (To be honest and quite frank if you really want a medical education and P/f grading that works for medical school why didnt you go to med school? Dental school is for making dentists).

Good luck with your choice.Choose wisely and whichever you like the best, not by what people say here which may even be inaccurate.

I chose to go to Stony Brook. 😀

You can't go wrong either way. Both schools are very solid schools with defined and refined curriculums. Congrats on your decision!
