Need a bit of advice.

Does anyone know if it's too late to apply to Stony Brook. The listed deadline date is Nov. 15th, but I received a letter from them (detailing that I'm missing my secondary) and they need everything by Nov. 30th. The application is a pain in the butt (3 one-page essays), but if I had to, I could probably do it tonight and mail it out tomorrow or tuesday.

The other thing is that I've heard that Stony Brook is a research-intensive school and I'm trying to avoid doing any more research. Is research that stressed at Stony Brook or would I be fine applying there and having 0 interest in doing more research.

I have applied to plenty of other schools, including another SUNY school (just to consider paying a lot less for med school), so that's not a factor for me.

no one can make you do research. on that note, i know people who have gotten into stony with zero research experience. the school is very picky about selecting people who they believe will "fit-in" there, whatever that means.

I've met several older, nontrads who were accepted to Stony Brook. I think they like a mixed garden salad of students, with alot of acceptance of over 22, with work experience. They seem pretty open-minded.

What the heck, you might as well submit the application. You never know what the outcome will be.

Rendar5 - I haven't finished my secondary either, but do plan to in the next day or so. Their AMCAS deadline was 11/15, but on their website it says "extended until 12/15". THe secondary app. and the letter I recieved says that secondary materials are due 11/30 (which is probably also extended if the AMCAS deadline is extended). I think they accept a decent # of people with a research background, but I don't think they force you to do research while you're there. If you're interested in the school, I'd finish it and send it this week.

Stony Brook rulz.

Out of all the schools I've visited, SUNY: Stony Brook were the happiest bunch I've seen so far. They were extremely warm, friendly and close-knit. When we visited the student lounge, there was a girl sleeping on one of the sofas. My student tour guide took a blanket and covered her with it. That was extremely touching and put Stony Brook as one of my top choices.

yeah, the med students at stony definetly made it one of my top choices. they all seem so happy to be there. and i love how everyone in each class is so close to each other. i go to stony brook for undergrad too and i see my tourguide around campus.
i was surprised that he remembered me, and he also came up to me talked how the application process was going and whether i was gonna come to stony brook.

i would say that you definetly should finish ur application to stony brook. it is a research institution, but i know of many med students who haven't done any research at all and they're fine.
I think they accept so many people with a research background is because alot of people who want to do research go here since they have the MD with research recognition program

How do the committee deliberations operate at Stony? Does the committee meet weekly, semimonthly or monthly?

Stony brook also ranked very highly as a primary care institution. It's a really well rounded school in a sweet area with an awesome price tag.

yeah i interviewed there in october and i just wanted to second everyone's positive thoughts. it seemed like a great school and all the students we met during the interview were really open with us and also really positive about their experience at school. plus, i specifically asked about research during the interview and he (a PhD) said that while it can get done, its not forced. lo and behold, i got in, and i had ZERO research experience. seems like a great school, i'd get that secondary sent if you can!

don't quote me on this, but i think they meet every two or three weeks. every interviewed candidate is placed on a ranked list. i don't know how often they send out acceptances but whenever they do, they pull a certain top percentage off of the list, so people who interviewed early might get in later on in the application process. the dean of admissions stressed that people are always moving around on the list so be patient, u could get lucky if they have a wave of applicants they don't like as much

an annoying thing about them is that the interviewers can take their sweet time getting in stuff to the admissions committee, there's no deadline. so u just have to wait if u have a lazy interviewer.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm now inspired to finish up and send out my application the moment I get back from Atlanta.

I dont know much about the SUNY schools but what are the chances of out of state applicants getting in to one of these schools. I will be applying next year and have been impressed by what I have heard and read about the SUNY schools.
