This post was posted by a SDN poster which I think was a reasonable question to ask. Chill with closing threads, if no one wants to answer they wont, and if someone can help they will. Maybe you should retire as an SND Moderator too njbmd. U been on too long, we need fresh politics and new faces with open minds and fresh ideas. Find another hobby and retire, no offense intended. And dont hold a grudge on me and decide to close any future post of mine or give me a warning, its just freedom of speech.

Hello all, I'll be starting med school this fall and I always promised myself I would stop smoking once I started med school. Any x-smokers out there have any tips on how to quit cold turkey? I would rather hear from people who smoked or are currently having trouble quitting, not from people who THINK they know how, but never smoked before.

Hi there,
This is a mis-use of SDN and therefore I am closing.

njbmd

How do you become a moderator anyway?

The first amendment doesn't guarantee freedom of speech on a private message board. The government can't interfere with your freedom of speech. SDN and its mods can shut down any thread they want.

i don't see what was so wrong with the stop smoking thread....was it viewed as a way for us to give medical advice? (which we're not allowed to do)

i still think it wasn't worthy of closing....

GUys - chill out. It appears that the thread was closed because it was a duplicate thread posted in multiple forums. No duplicate threads are allowed in multiple forums. It was not a content based closure from what I see.

chill; njbmd is one of the nicest and most helpful people on this board.

LOL

If I, as a poster, post to a post where another poster posted a post, will I reach the center of the lollipop?

😉

I WANT AN OOMPA LOOMPA NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I absolutely agree 100%. A good portion of the time, njbmd provides the most rational and helpful responses I encounter in many threads.

In my opinion, this duplicate threads thing is a real pain. For example, many questions I may have about pre-med or med school topics are not specific to either MD or DO. How do you decide which forum to post on?

Personally, I'd like to see SDN reconfigured such that there are general pre-med (both MD and DO) and general med school (both MD and DO) categories and then MD or DO specific areas could be within them as subcategories. That way general questions can be asked and easily viewed by all and the option for degree specific questions can also be had. The sub-categories for the specific schools could then be a tertiary layer under each of the sub MD/DO categories. Does this make sense to anyone else - sorry if it sounds confusuing?

personally i sort of agree with this. anytime I want to post the same question on two boards, I use different titles and pose the question slightly differently. 😎 so far they've not been closed.

haha

this is sdn. not america. you have no rights bitch.

What does PWNED mean?

MD2b20004,

Medicine is not a democracy. Its a heirarchy. You have no rights... until maybe you're an attending. When you're an MSIII and a surgical resident tells you to shut the ____ up, I'd really like you to see you preach him about your first amendment rights.

I second the notion that NJBMD gives us all valuable input. Maybe he's not the one that needs to chill. Maybe he's not the one that needs to leave SDN...

PWNED = OWNED

in certain online (esp gaming) communities you find people typing fast, and a slip of the finger easily turns "you got owned" to "you got pwned," since the p & the o are next to each other on keyboards....

I found this out after all these people at work started using the word "pwned." I thought they were just being silly, but then someone explained it to me.

Relax guys. The intention of the post was to put a check and balance on the SDN network and make sure those who want to be heard can be heard (within respect and reason), and threads that don't warrant being closed like the MD vs DO thread or the question of the OP about how to quite smoking can be answered and give others prospectives to what can be enlightening information. If no one answers, the thread will die on its own.
To all those who took my post out of context and trolled or bad mouthed me, no offense taken by me, it's always expected not to be loved when a person speaks out, hence why medicine involves a lot of brown nosing and Kissing A$$ and so does life in general, but I am the type the says stuff as I see it and really don't care how others who don't know me preceive me as, you cant appreciate someone fully without knowing them as a whole. I am the outspoken type of personality, I don't beat around the bush, I don't kiss butt, even, etc... but I am always honest, and sincere in my intentions that I do.

All in all, the thread was initiated as a defense for the OPs thread that wanted what I think was a simple and fair question to answer, how to quite smoking. It was not until another OP wrote opened another thread which was after this thread was the issue allowed to be discussed and it was not closed again. And I think the check and balance thread (this thread) had a lot to do with why the second thread about smoking was not closed, so in my opinion my goal was implemented. Now for all those who brought Law, if I like the Moderators or not, or put words in my mouth, thats just a reflection of who you are as a person. I don't hate or dislike anyone, not on this forum, and not in life, heck I still even get along with all my exgfs and they call as friends, lucky me 👍
Take care all.
PS

I love how the moderators, regardless who it was closed down the (Dr. Mom for retirement thread) when it was the most popular thread (it terms of responses and people reading the thread). I think a thread should die off when it dies off, and there was a reason why the thread went on for how long it went on, everyone wanted to give their prospective, which is fair. Not to put gas on the fire, but I think it was wrong to close the thread, if SDNers dont want to post or talk about their opionions and everyone gets sick of it or has something better to do, the thread will die on its own. Better than Being SHUT DOWN. 😕

I disagree. I read the entire DO vs. MD thread. Early on, there was some genuinely good discussion. However, after a couple pages it progressed mostly to insults and stupidity. Personally, the mods let most of these threads go on far longer than I would. Some threads do die on their own, but ones like the DO vs. MD one go on forever because people start flaming each other and hurling insults. When it gets to this point, the thread has denigrated far from the original point and might as well be closed. With the thousands of people who are on SDN, these threads keep going. Just when you think it has died a natural death, somebody who either hasn't been on in ages or is new dredges it up.

As for those of you b*tching because the thread praising Dr. Mom is still open while the one criticizing her was closed, please remember that the mods allowed the critical one to go on for what, four pages? until it got to the point where people were just name calling and not even attempting to make rational comments (i.e. the freedom of the internet thing).

The moderators attempt to keep these boards at a helpful and somewhat professional tone. Letting threads that are no longer useful or that are insulting continue on makes this service less valuable for those who come here seeking advice and help. As has been pointed out, the Drs. Lounge has been established where you can talk about whatever to your heart's content allowing you to express yourselves and at the same time attempt to maintain the usefulness of SDN.

The problem is, this isn't really true. One M.D./D.O. thread pops up every few weeks. That is not very frequently at all for a pretty important topic. The reality is, everytime a thread ends up pointing out the five point MCAT differential, the .3 gpa differential even after knocking out original grades on retaken classes, the 30% USMLE Step 1 failure rate among the self-selected
Step 1 takers, the consistently weak match lists, it gets shut down. Instead, the only threads that are allowed to survive are the B.S. ones that talk about treating the whole doctor and having a different "philosophy," as everything an M.D. is plus more, and the like.

um, was there any particular point in taking all those shots at d.o. schools? are you trying to convince us all that there's some silent pro-osteopath conspiracy on sdn?

on a side note, there seems to be a consensus among most of the people i know that osteopathic students are a lot less psychotic than allopathic ones.
