just wondering how many of you guys don't smoke or do drugs and for what reasons?

this should be a poll, but i don't smoke or do drugs for any reason

haha drinking is fun, but be warned dont' drink some asian liquor, i got really dizzy and sick after 2 shots.

drugs are bad, mmmkay? And having a criminal past isn't a good way to start off your med school application. But I drink periodically.

I would think that most people would probably not admit to doing illegal drugs, but I could be wrong. I don't smoke, but I am certainly not straight edge. I don't really care for the title because it can be limiting. It is nice to have a drink when I feel like it. But it is cool if others are strict with themselves. It seems like a LOT of med students drink (at least from those I have known, heard of, etc), and I mean quite a bit.

I don't drink or do drugs. For several reasons:
1) I have never felt the desire. I have enough things in life that give me a high, I don't need drugs to do it.
2) Too many negative side effects to be worth the positives.
3) Alcoholism runs in my family and risking addiction isn't worth it.
4) I'm a control freak and can't stand the thought of being out of control due to drugs.

I am constantly around people who do though, so I have no problem with people who choose to use. Its just not for me.

No disrespect to the OP, but drug/pre-med threads tend to turn into flame-fests here on SDN quite quickly... Just, FWIW. Do a search and you will find out what a circus these topics have caused.

And, no, I don't abuse drugs, or smoke, since doing so would take me out of my wholeness, impair my ability to respond to life, and decrease my level of aliveness.

I am blessed/cursed to be repulsed by the taste of alcohol and cigarette smoke. I'm keeping toxins away but I can't friggin enjoy a good drink when I really need it 😳

Though, one of the smartest pre-meds I knew (who now attends one of the Top Five medical schools) smoked weed periodically.

i think smoking and drugs are in a different category than drinking. i guess it's weird, but one way of thinking about it might be there are actual benefits to drinking red wine, but smoking and most drugs are just bad for you.

I can't stand smokers. Nobody in my family smokes. With that said, we all have skeletons in our closets 😳 🙄

wtf?! how many? ive never done drugs or smoke. i would think majority of us are straight edge.

lol omg i don't know what they use to make that, like its not as strong as 151, its only 120 proof about, but wtf i almost passed out.

Yeah, I know. A story from the very distant past: I was teaching my young cousins some English and everybody was like, "here drink up...you have to drink because it's our custom, etc., etc." So I gulped up a few, thinking, "oh, it's just wine". Yeah, right. I was downright silly after 2. I think my cousins are now speaking slurred English, thinking that's how it's supposed to go.

OP:

Seriously though, even though I don't abuse drugs, I hardly consider myself "straight-edge"... Isn't there a whole subculture around that, "sXe"?

I highly doubt this.

As do I. I think its more likely that the group that happens to be on here leans straight edge. Particularly the group that is posting on Sunday night.

I second the suggestion that drinking is in a separate category than smoking/drugs. I never cared to do the latter because they have legitimate negative impacts on your health....never felt the need to try.
Alcohol is a different story though...in moderation it doesn't hurt anyone.
hmmm...I've actually probably doubled my alcohol consumption since starting med school...I wonder why?

Exercise gives me a very nice high. It really does.

I binge drink occasionaly, but I'm not the type to have 3 beers every night while I watch TV. I used to smoke weed on occasion, but I haven't in some time. I've never really "abused" any other drugs though.

I don't smoke, do drugs, or cheat. I consider having old exams that were not released as cheating. I bet most ppl cant say that. Also, i am a light social drinker.

I agree that this would be better off as an anonymous poll; I think the SDNers who do have these habits are more reluctant to post due to finding such actions possibly incriminating. Furthermore, the flash point for these threads is very low, as previously stated. It seems that all posters so far have no drug habits.

I don't drink, smoke, etc.

If I was single I may drink a little. It gives me an excuse to do "stupid things" that I "regret" *wink* *wink*. Other than that, it does nothing for me.

I don't drink, nor do I smoke. Simply not doing drugs doesn't make anyone straight edge, though. That's something completely different.

Well, straight edge is defined as one who doesn't smoke, do drugs, /or/ drink. That being said, I drink all the time and I'm not the least bit ashamed of it. Why? Because alcohol is a legal and easy way to unwind from what probably is a stressful life for most college students. I would be much more leery of the person who said they never indulged in a vice as opposed to the person who does indulge in a vice once in awhile. The reason being is that the one who has no experience with addictive things such as alcohol and drugs is far more prone to becoming addicted than the one who has already experienced addictive things and is not addicted.

I disagree with that. sXe-ers generally rock to hardcore punk music and also, in addition to not smoking, doing drugs, and drinking, generally don't engage in "casual" sex. From what I've read, sXe is very connected to music and it's a whole philosophy unto itself.

I might be mistaken though, because my knowledge of this subculture is only academic.

I believe it's important to be able to relate to people, especially since this medical field is going to involve helping people, most of whom have done more than just drink. I enjoy being able to converse about silly stories from a night of debauchery and also about the dangerous effects that many of the chemicals at hand can produce.

It's nice to see that people are doing what makes them happy though on this thread. I believe it's all about the experience one would like to have in life as long as it doesn't hurt others.

That said, I've met some brilliant doctors with great stories involving the illegal and what's the point of living if you can't get a few good stories out of it. (Note: this is not saying that all good stories involve the illegal).

I drink occasionally, thats it. Tried pot a few times, never cigarettes or anything else. Even if I did, i wouldnt do it very long. Not a good idea when you have asthma (I had to give up hookah 🙁 ).

On a side note, I just have to say I cant stand people who get drunk often but then look down on people who smoke, either weed or cigarettes, or use any other drugs for that matter. It seems pretty hypocritical.

Worse than that: people who deny being smokers because they only "smoke when they drink," or "smoke occasionally with their friends."

Nooo... sXe extends to not having a glass of wine with dinner, either. It's a vow people take, and people who are genuine take for life. I'm not straightedge in any capacity, but I do like Fugazi. Even AFI. Does that count for anything? 😉

This is true. It is a life style, like being vegan is more than just not eating meat/dairy/eggs/animal product stuff in general.

Yes! haha. I know so many people--professional or not--who you would never think did anything like such and have the best stories--though they don't generally share them. I think it made them interesting people, a little spice if you will. Of course I don't think it is for everyone. Many can't handle a little fun now and then and others just aren't into it. Totally cool.

I used to do nicotine. I initially tried it as a 19-year old premed who wanted to know what addition was like. Man did I find out, and couldn't quit for years without a lot of hassle and personal pain.

Straight-edge is specifically related to music, you're correct in that. The main type of music I listen to is metal and that's predominantly where straight-edger's come from...most of them listen to either emo or metalcore music. And yes generally some degree of celbacy is associated with straight-edge too but I highly doubt that many people follow it. For that matter, most people don't follow all the stipulations of straight-edge for very long. Oh yeah, if you've ever been to a metal concert and saw straight-edge dancing, you'd lose all respect for any sort of sXe people anyway. I've seen the "******" dance at about half a dozen concerts so far and it never ceases to give me an aneurysm.🙄

I dont smoke cancer sticks or refer and I def. dont do any crazy narcotics...I do casually drink.

That ish has never been of any interest to me...and I am not the type that will compromise my beliefs just for the sake of fitting in with the crowd. I still manage to get my swerve on the dance floor wit da honies.

I have my share of fun

Am I the only one who thinks the grouping of emo/metalcore is rather counterintuitive?

Unless you're talking first- or second-wave emo. . . SDRE? Fugazi? Anyone?

I have never smoked or done drugs and don't intend to. Why start something horribly bad for you? I have no objection to drinking though!

Thank you for posting.

I'm not familiar with emo; I'm just aware that some people who listen to some sort of emo music are straight-edge....same as people who listen to metalcore. I'm only familiar with metalcore since I listen to a lot of it myself. Avenged Sevenfold, It Dies Today, Bleeding Through, etc.

In response to prazmatic (forgot to quote)

I don't get drunk ever! I just have a drink every once in a while, that's different! Some people take everything out of context...

I don't smoke or do drugs because....why would I? It's expensive and harmful and plain stinky.

Drinking, I see nothing wrong with having a drink once in a while (without getting stupidly drunk)...but I'm only 20 so no drinks for me.

Exactly how I feel, except I am 21 and can legally drink.

I occasionally drink/ smoke weed. I tried a cigarette, and hated it. Generally, I don't like to make a habit of these things.

I chase the dragon from time to time. It hasn't hurt me academically yet, my numbers are competitive anywhere. The key is, like anything, not let it take over your life. You can do heroin and coke and not have it hurt your chances at medical school, or get addicted to world of warcraft and fail out.

I've never smoked, I'm vegetarian, and I've never tasted alcohol my whole life.

My whole family is clean. Its just our beliefs. I'm proud to be totally clean.

Nice.

I eat meat, drink red wine daily, and will bum an occasional smoke. I'm proud too.
