Hi guys!

Hope you're all having fun on your interview trail. I had a very strange interview last month with a program that I wanted to talk about. I will not be participating in the DO match this year, so I feel comfortable discussing this but ill still leave out the name of the program for now.

Anyway, I was interviewed by the program director as well as a resident. The program director was very nice, I may have dropped the ball on one question asking why I wanted to go into this field, didn't explain it very well but we had a few things in common and I think we had a nice conversation.

The second part was a resident who asked if I had either rotated with their program before or if I was an "outside pick". I said I had not rotated there. She then said, "oh the cheif resident probably picked you, hes a real ladies man and always like to pick out the pretty girls"

I wasn't sure how to respond but laughed nervously and said something like, "well at least I'm here now!".

Besides that, she talked about how easy the call schedule was and what shows she liked to TiVo at home. No hard questions, just chatted like friends.

Anyway, a few days after that interview I received an email saying I was an "unlikely match". I don't know why these strange things always happen to me, but what do you guys suggest that I do? I know I'm not ranking that program, and probably only doing the MD match this year anyway and that was a DO program. It's for a pretty competitive field and one of the bigger DO programs for that field.

They said I could call and talk to a coordinator if I had questions and I kind of want to ask... "was I not pretty enough at the interview?!?!" lol not really, but yeah.....

Cliffs:

resident said I was picked because "they pick pretty girls", then was basically rejected by program. Is this sexual harassment? Why did I waste $300 and 2 days of my life for this joke.

I would suggest you do nothing and chalk it up to a learning experience. However, I'm sure someone here will suggest you post a picture so they can rate you and tell you for sure. I would suggest you DON'T do that 🙂

Just keep it moving. The resident was a ***** so take it as a good thing you're not a good fit. It would seem they don't pick pretty girls with professionalism so that is why you're not a good fit. Brush it off and you'll get in somewhere else.

Even though this sounds like an odd case, I will tell you from my previous work experience in software industry. Good looking women always got moved up faster, dot period. Remember, this is not a sales/advertising/marketing, this is in tech industry.

I used to know someone who would ony employ/promote slender women. Normal weight or fat men, no problem.

As a person on your own, without something like a trade union to back you up, there is nothing you can do which will have any effect on the situation other than to harm your own reputation and distract you from getting a good residency somewhere else.

My advice to to do nothing. Being a female, there will be plenty of harassment to deal with. It is not fair. People just don't know how to keep their thoughts and their hands to themselves.

I started as an attending at 28 and had many people twice my age hit on me at the hospital. It was really disgusting.

In Manhattan, there was a coffee shop on the upper west side that would only hire large-breasted women.

I wish people told me I was hot and then gave me promotions/jobs because of it. The only person who tells me I'm pretty is my girlfriend.

If I recall correctly the police investigated and actually found that the waitresses were all daughters of the owner.

LOL that would be an awkward conversation. "Sir we've had reports that you are only hiring sexy vixens with big titties." The owner stands, his face purpling with rage, "Those are my daughter goddamn't!"

If memory serves me correct, it's a Seinfeld episode.

Sorry to hear this OP. I think the Resident was just joking. Nevertheless quite an unprofessional thing for an interview. As others have said, chalk it up to experience. I would come out of that confident. Pretty girls win in all industries. I'm not trying to be stereotypical, I'm being honest. This is experience in Fortune 500, startup, academic medicine speaking...seen every time.

On a side note, it could be worse....much much much worse. As in, you're a new Administrator and you're called down to HR because in an interview of a lab tech your lead cyto-geneticist's first question was, "Are you pregnant and how old are you?" True story. LOL!

I'm appalled by all the people here saying to "do nothing" essentially. This is completely inappropriate behavior and should be reported. You guys aren't bffs... this is a professional interview for a job. It's a headache to say something, but considering you're not even joining the DO match, you're in a unique position to do something about that.

It would just be hersay. You can't do anything about it. You don't know why she wasn't ranked highly.
