I got a thin envelope from SUNY Downstate yesterday, thought for sure it was another rejection...

Turns out it was some adcomm form written by hand requesting me to explain what I did during the winter and spring of 1995. 1995!!!

I guess I should look at it as a good sign, they could've just thrown my application out, but instead they looked it over with a fine-toothed comb.....and they just couldn't get enough!

Anyone else get this strange request for more info than was included on the 20+ pages of the primary and secondary apps combined??

What DID you in the winter and spring of 95?

SUNY Downstate wants to see my grades from this semester before they interview me. My grades this semester are already suffering because I had 3 interviews smack dab in the middle of midterms week. I was taking tests at night and early morning just to make up for them.

I feel your pain, but keep up the great work, you can do it!

Oh you know, hung out at the mall, worked on my tan, drank heavily, played a lot of SEGA, etc....

I took a year off from school and worked full-time (I'm a bit older than most applicants) and that was the year after I finished high school. I'm not a NY resident though.

That makes you only 27, or about that age.

Yes I know how old I am, thanks.

But great deductive reasoning skills, you're a great med school candidate. 😀

(ave. age med school matriculant = 23?)

Sorry I didn't realize you were such a tool. I simply ment to imply you were not THAT old.

SUNY Downstate asked me for my grades from this semester also. I recieved that little thin envelope hand written, automatically thought it was a rejection, but happen to be a request to submit this semesters' grades.

I took last year off while applying and they sent me a similar letter asking me to account for my time off. Apparently it wasnt good enough for them- REJECTED!, preinterview.

Ouch! did you work? Are you a NY resident?

I received a letter from them stating that I should send my most recent transcript but meanwhile they will wait till december to interview me..😕

Want your grades first, then they will interview you, or they plan to interview u before they get the grades.

Well, count yourselves lucky guys - Bushbaby too ! - Woolie lives about 15 blocks from Downstate and would like to go to school there. I haven't heard anything, despite being complete since the end of August. I mean, I could walk to school fer chissakes'.

Actually, I'm out west for a year, but my apartment is still just sublet. I wish Downstate would write to me. A friend of a friend of a friend kind of person is on the adcom, and I wondered if it would be worth it to try and 'talk to' all these friends of friends but in the end, decided I wouldn't bother, and would just try and do in on my own merits.

Still, my feelings are getting hurt ... 😀

I believe he only said he was a BIT older than most applicants....isn't 27 just that?

The letter stated that they wish to interview me and a date will be sent in December but they want to see my most recent transcript. I have no problem with sending it but why are htey waiting all the way to december to invite me for an interview. I am in grad school and I am taking only one class this semester, so they want to wait for ONE grade?

Thanks for getting my back, friend.

I'm a woman by the way.
Haven't you heard the song...."she's a brick - HOWSE - she's mightay mightay, lettin' it all hang out" or am I really aging myself now....

BUSHBABY I AM IN THE SAME BOAT AS YOU. DOWNSTATE WROTE THE SAME LETTER TO ME, AND I AM ONLY TAKING ONE CLASS ALSO THIS SEMESTER. WHAT IS ONE GRADE GONNA PROVE OR CHANGE IN MY APPLICATION. THE REQUEST IS VERY AWKWARD, MAKES NO SENSE.

After reading about DownState(mdapplicants.com/interview feedback) and interviewing there, I got the feeling of a love/hate relationship that DownState has with their applicants. It's like, they either really want you or hate you - nothing in the middle.

I am hoping they aren't waiting for the grades before they invite me for an interview. I re-read the letter last night and it said that if you are currently in school to send them my semester grades or whatever...it made no indication that they were waiting for the grades. It also said a "photocopy" so I don't think they want anything "official".

I am taking two fast track courses in grad school and I just finished one class last week so the grade should be out by next week. If possible, I will send them that grade to keep them happy.

Meanwhile, I will sit here and wait to receive my interview date from them and from other schools as well.

All this hullabaloo is yet another reason why Upstate is better than Downstate.

(Sorry, I gotta get my digs in.) 😀

Ok now I've really had it with Downstate...

I rush home to my mailbox today (like always) and there is a "thick" manilla envelope from Downstate....and I think "Oh my god!!"

So I open it....it's their med school applicant's handbook.

This, after sending in a secondary and a letter answering their request for additional information...

Why won't they stop toying with me!!?? +pissed+

Yeah right who would want to live in the amazing city of Syracuse and have nothing to do. If anyone has questions about Downstate feel free to ask or pm me.
