As acceptances come in, I'm sure we all want to know how we can actually afford a graduate degree. Does anyone have any suggestions about financial aid opportunities at these programs? Would it work to leverage acceptances and negotiate with schools to get a good deal?

Anyways, I'm just throwing this thread out there for us to discuss finances, housing, scholarship opportunities, etc, bc I'm sure it's on everyone's mind after the excitement of acceptance dwindles, and financial reality sets in...

Don't be afraid to ask and have frank conversations with each department. Most schools probably can't do much, but it never hurts to ask. Most scholarships tend to be awarded at time of acceptance, although a few schools here and there do offer fellowships you can apply for after you're a student to cover years 2 and beyond (if you're a doctoral student).

If you receive a fellowship, you can definitely try to use that as leverage, though, to get more from another school. Don't get too crazy over it, though. Remember, it's still a privilege to go to school, and by no means do you need to fight it like a job salary negotiation.
