Is there a good strategy for these types of folds?

I usually like to find a central unique shape and quickly scan through the options comparing ONLY the directly connected folds to that shape. in most cases this works (but not for die cubes and similar)

These are the easiest and my favorite type of pattern folding. Make sure the final product has all the unique pieces in it, then check for connectivity.

A--the top 2 L and P shapes are not connected by their skinny sides.

D--has the same connectivity problem as A, with the L and P shapes.

At this point it is hard to distinguish between B and C, so I would look at B because it shows us the triangle portion. This is where I get stumped, and would simply pick B because I can see all the different shapes are present.

Whats the answer? I pick B

For these kind of folds, I like to focus on the landmark shapes, the oddly-shaped sides. It's easy to get disoriented in the L's and rectangles. First check out the red indented trapezoid. It's oriented so that when folded it'll point in one direction. A and C have theirs pointed the other way as a mirror image, so they can automatically be eliminated. Next the blue side is a convex pentagon. The corresponding side in D is a concave 6-sided figure, so D is incorrect. B is all that's left and if you feel like it you can verify that it's the correct fold.

Focus on the front 3 pieces on this pattern fold and you will see B is the only one that lines up. This is definitely a difficult fold but if you focus on the landmarks and rule stuff out, you will at least get to 50/50. Also another trick once you get down to 50/50 is find a landmark on one of the choices and follow it to see if it's correct. If you have followed that landmark all around and it's correct, you have foound your answer.
