I am a Junior majoring in Biomedical Engineering but have realized that I want to pursue optometry because I like the patient interaction aspect of the field rather than sitting in a lab. My problem is that a lot of my courses don't match up with the required courses for most schools. For example, I haven't taken biochemistry or microbiology, but have taken high level BME courses such as biomaterials and polymer science and cellular and tissue engineering. Specifically, Nova Southeastern is looking for 15 credits in the humanities and social sciences, which is not included in my degree program. My question is how strict are they on this? Is it possible to get in taking my higher level engineering classes but maybe missing a lower level biology or chemistry course? It would be hard for me to fit in these courses in my last few semesters and graduate with my degree in BME, so I'm trying to figure out what course of action is best. Thanks for your input!

I agree, call and ask the schools you're most interested in attending. It's unlikely they'll let you off the hook for the lower level bio/chem courses. If you took AP courses in humanities like English, history, etc in high school, that might help? Also, it seems like for most schools they'll let you take courses you need at like community colleges or maybe even online, as late as the summer before optometry school, so ask about that too.
