I'm currently a sophomore in premed. I'm retaking a Biology class I got a D in the first time. To get a B in my retake class, I need to make a 90 on my final. I know making a C for retake would be bad but how bad would it be to medical schools? I also got a D in calculus my first semester. I'm retaking that and I know I can make an A for sure. I haven't taken any other sciences classes other than my first semester of Biology. I have an overall GPA of 3.0 right now. Is there still hope for medical school?

Stop now... just get that 90. To get a C in Bio is not a good sign at all. Take some other classes and reduce your class load. Take some time of to rethink your life. Bombing these classes is going to screw your future so make sure you get that 90 then. Stop and slow down. Take some light weight stuff or take some time off.

DO NOT get a C in general biology! Do everything that is legal to get that grade up to a B. Without knowledge and understanding of basic bio, it will be difficult to understand biochem, microbio, genetics, A&P, etc. More importantly, determine how and why you are getting low grades in classes like gen bio. Then fix the problem.

Go to the learning center on campus and determine if you have a learning disability (like dyslexia). Then you can learn how to overcome it if you have it.

There's hope, but you need to figure out what your issue is. Ds in first year courses aren't acceptable. I would go so far to say that Cs aren't acceptable - or at least that should be your mindset. Counting yourself out after your first year is premature, but keep in mind that there are many students who do well in classes AND make headway in the EC realm. These are the people you will be applying with, and against them (if this level of performance continues) your chances aren't positive.

(sent from my phone - please forgive typos)

Your a sophomore. Just get a 3.7+ the next four semesters before you apply and you'll be golden. I had a 3.2 at the end of my sophomore year and one semester of a 4.0 has already raised me to a 3.48. Basically what I'm saying is, don't freak out until you have a 3.0 at the end of your junior year. A lot of times reading SDN makes you freak out, but anyone can come on here and say they have a 3.9 just relax and figure out your problem. Worst comes to worst you need to take a upper level bio like physiology or anatomy and get an A in it to prove that you can handle harder sciences.

you realize that they dont just look at ur gpa but the individual grade u get in ur sciencourse especially the prereq. D or C in gen bio is unacceptable, prolly going to to need explanation, even if it is bio 2 where you just learn about taxonomy and stupid animals.

well if you go 4.0 for the next two years you'll end with a 3.5 (which is still subpar). Just continue to work hard.

Yeah I know it doesn't look too good for my GPA. I'm trying to take extra math classes to boost my science GPA. I don't know about taking upper level sciences classes though. I'm only minoring in chemistry so I just have one 300 level class to take. Other than that, I chose not to major in a science.

Until you start getting A's, nothing else matters. Don't just throw in extra classes without correcting the problem. You are doing something wrong; if you really want to go to medical school, you need to figure out what it is, and fix it, before you hurt your GPA any more.

Upper-level sciences will likely be necessary to both boost your sGPA, and prove to adcoms that you can handle science courses and pull off As despite your early performance. Again, nothing matters until you start getting As, so that is your priority. :luck:

I would really suggest rethinking the whole premed thing. You received a D in the EASIEST biology course there is and the easiest one you will ever take.

Get off SDN and study. The answers aren't here, they are in your textbooks...

+1.

I would also add OP is about to get a C in a re-take! Seriously consider if you're cut out for this. Bad enough to get a D the first time, absolutely unacceptable to get a C (or really even a B) the second time. These are pre-requisites, so schools look at the grade individually. Talk to the teacher and see if there's something extra-credity you can do to make sure you get at least a B.

I wouldn't necessarily say General Biology is the easiest class. If it were everyone would be taking it to get an easy grade. Results vary form individual to individual.

Less classes=greater chance to succeed

You should get off SDN and go study.

She's(?) getting an A in Calculus, LOL @ "re-think pre-med." Make sure that you are using all of your resources in the class to try to get the best grade possible. Biology may not be your subject but you are probably capable of pulling out at least a B.

I'd say C on a re-take is a lot more significant than getting an A in calc as to the OP's ability to excel in the pre-med courses.....

Are you saying that Biology is more difficult than Calculus? I understand Biology matters more but if this is the only class to give OP a problem then why should she drop pre-med so sudden?

It is the easiest class for a pre-med. And everyone in almost any science major is taking it.

Not more difficult, but rather the ability to succeed in Calc says a lot less about the ability to succeed as a pre med (i.e. get into med school) than getting a C when re-taking Bio I.

1 out of 10 premeds make it to medical school.

9 out of 10 medical students become doctors.

I get what you are saying but, from what I have heard, Calc is not an easy class so it makes me assume that she is capable of getting good grades. Would you have quit if you struggled in Bio 1 without trying Chem or Physics?

Maybe because I have a hard time giving up I don't like to see others do so. Although I am aware of how many people actually apply to med school in comparison to being pre-med.

If you read my response to the OP specifically, I didn't say give up, I said stop and figure out why you are struggling before continuing.

Honestly, if I had to retake a pre-med class and then barely passed it on my second attempt, I probably would have looked into a different career. But remember, I am not the one saying the OP should do this. Instead, the OP needs to figure out what is going wrong, and fix it, before further damaging his or her GPA.

I disagree a bit with the posts above.

General biology may be one of the easiest classes, but it's certainly not the easiest to get a high grade in. At my school it's a weed out course with 600+ students.

Ok, I wrongfully assumed that you were one of the people telling the OP to quit. I agree with you.

if you haven't even taken calc, you're probably an underclassman (if that) who shouldn't be involved in this discussion.
