So anyone got any student host horror stories?

The only one that happened to me was a host who made himself hard to contact so I decided to play it safe and booked a hotel at the last minute rather than working out details 15min before I board my flight or something. Glad I did cause the host didn't contact me again until the morning of my interview.

all my student hosts were one of the nicest people i have ever met. to go through all that trouble just to make me feel at home at their place is awesome. something they dont have to do but they choose to do and it made the entire experience that much better.

i think horror stories will be rare, since the people who dont want to do these things dont even sign up for it. sorry for your case tho.

unfortunately a lot of the times the students are testing and stuff and cant respond in a timely manner but all my hosts were nice enough to give me their cell phone numbers so that i could have a more reliable form of contact and give them all my information without worrying that they might not get it.

My student host was so creepy I decided not to attend that school...even though my interview was with the dean of admissions and we totally bonded and I got my acceptance letter less than 2 weeks later. That, and someone started screaming about Jesus needing to save them, salvation, blah blah blah in the cafeteria and had to be removed. Now, if that had been one of the psych patients who had escaped, fine, but it was an OR nurse who just decided to throw a fit.

My other student hosts were cool, though, and I'm hosting this year so I hope I'm not creeping people out.

Wow may you give us hints on what school it was? I would probably avoid that school for good 😉

I think I only stayed with two student hosts, and for the rest of the interviews, I chose to stay in hotel instead. It's just more hazzle if say your student host wanna watch TV in the living room, but you wanna sleep instead (also in the living room). That happened at my stay at a student host, and I ended up being really tired the next day.

my friend from mcat class was interviewing in a school in PA.....student host was really nice but at the evening time he didn't get the hint and kept hanging around her sofa bed chatting away. next night he confessed how attracted he was to her. really awkard situation for her. she deciided to stay the last night there anyway though (i would have bailed earlier) and she woke up in the middle of the night with teh guy standing near her sofa bed just staring at her. freaky!!!!

ps she hasn't heard back from the school yet but i'm pretty sure she is not going there!!

What if someone gets "Lucky" and meet the next Dr. Hannibal Lecter Jr. or something? I mean he IS a physician (Forensic Psychiatrist?) and certain was a med student!

Yikes... so the applicant might end up as a cadaver for the MS1's? I always wondered where they got those corpses from. I'd better go into something safe like plumbing!

I had a similar experience, but mine worked out great in the end. The night before I was supposed to fly out, I still hadn't heard from my assigned host. I posted a message on here and another student from the school offered to host me. Ironically, the student who offered to host me is friends with my assigned host. It turns out he just plain forgot, but called me as soon as his friend told him. I arranged to stay with my original host and he was awesome. Probably one of the nicest guys I've ever met. It gave me a real good impression of the school.

All of my student hosts have been absolutely awesome. I think the vast majority of them are. It's a self-selective process: you'd only volunteer to host prospective students if you're generally a nice, altruistic person, right?

But I do agree that loomis' story is a bit freaky! Hopefully those cases are rare.

The last student host I had was kind of weird. She made me sleep in her bed with her, and she slept naked. I was kind of apprehensive at first, but it turned out to be a beautiful night for both of us.

No, that didn't really happen. This thread was just sort of boring so far. 😉

That would be sweet.

Staying with a student host can be hit-or-miss. If you get a weird one, your whole impression of the school is tainted!

Here is a true horror story... (somewhat long)

First interview 2 years ago, Host sheet says 5 male roomates, spare bed w/ shower in own room, no animals, no smoking.....

Set up w/host to stay for the night before my interview, called in advance and got directions and then the night before let him know that I would be there around 5pm.

Cabbed it from the airport to his house, only to find that he wasn't home yet, this is in November and the cabbie had already taken off, so I'm stuck sitting on my suitcase w/nothing but a coat on in his front yard.

About an hour later he comes home and says something like "oh, one of my roomates was supposed to be here, my bad" I can't remember the rest because I was literally frozen.

So we head into his house which is completely trashed and he goes on to tell me that he hates his house mates and the only reason that he rents is that they help w/his house payments (he is the owner).

The whole time he is telling me this his 2 y.o. alaskan huskie is jumping on me (I'm allergic) and starts chewing on my suitcase, which is now covered in tons of white dog hair (along w/me).

He takes me to the "room" that I was going to stay in, which was in reality a large closet that was supposed to go to one of the bedrooms. The "bed" was a mattress on the floor that happened to also double as the dogs bed/play pen.

So in all seriousness I am sleeping on the dogs bed. I can't help notice that for some reason there is red smears all over the place, until I put 2&2 toghther and see that the dog is menstruating and smearing goo all over the matress (which had no sheets).

The "host" tells me that I can put my stuff in here and he'd block the basement stairs off so the dog couldn't get in (the closet had no door). He then leaves me and tells me directions on how to get to McDonalds, which he can't drop me off at because he is late for a meeting.

After getting back from McD's (which I stayed at for 3 hours, since I'm allergic to dogs) I come back only to find that the roomates had come home, gone inside to get something, and left again, and in the process, locked the door again, with me stuck outside, again.

About another hour goes by and the "host" shows up and lets me in (frozen and pissed off), and to my not-suprise, the roomates had opened up the basement and the dog was now sleeping/eating/menstruating all over my suitcase including my suit etc.

Being pretty PO'd at this point I decide that I'll just go to sleep and get to the interview the next day and forget this ever happened. After fighting the dog off of my blood smeared mattress, I come to discover that the "host" had no extra sheets or blankets, and told me I could grab a pillow off of one of his roomates beds to use (which I declined). So I fell asleep on a giant maxi-pad, wrapped in my coat and the clothes that I traveled in w/no pillow.

So at about 3am, I awake to yelling and stuff breaking etc. It seems that two of the roomates came home, managed to PO the "host" and he had decided to evict them that night. He proceeded to start throwing things out the doors etc and fight w/them until the next day, when one of the roomates took me to the school for my interview.

Needless to say, I dressed for my interview at the school in the bathroom, and didn't look too sharp.

It gave both me and the interviewer some good laughs the next day, and I was accepted about 2 weeks after that.

I doubt that anyone can top that!!!!!

HAHAA omg how could they NOT admit you after that!?

HollyJ, do you know MurderousDonkey? Between the naked host and the spontaneous golden shower story, you guys must be related....

OMG Tyson that is so disgusting. I would have hailed a cab to the nearest motel 6, you're a brave soul for sticking it out! And to think those kids are in medical school? And why are boys so gross!?

Lots of people can top this one, but it is a little sad: I was staying with a MD/PhD at a southern school. He was married and she was doing research of some kind (not PhD track). They both were extremely nice and chill people, as were their friends.

However, I was going to be in town for another night due to flights (I had thought I would just sleep in the airport) and they were nice enough to offer I stay for a second night. Everything, again, went fine... except when I went to pack up my stuff in the morning. I had, after coming back the night before, had put my jacket on the big dog cage (empty) so as to not make a mess of their office (where the dogs slept). However, I didn't even think that something might happen should the dog be put in the cage and (apparently) the owners didn't either. So in the morning, my leather jacket (nice but not super expensive- bought on sale in italy) was missing a sizable chunk.

They were so nice the whole time that, even after they dropped me off at the airport, I never let on. I wove goodbye, waited, and tossed the jacket into the trash as I entered the terminal.

I had a friend stay with a host, while interviewing at a school in Georgia ( not mentioning names). He said everything went find, until about 3am when cops came busting into the apartment. The host was arrested for having sexual encounters with an underaged girl and posting videos of them on the web. My friend spent the night at the jail answering questions, and in the end rejected from the school.

jlee and exmike, you guys are terrible! 😱

I wouldn't call this a horrible student host experience by any means--more like a walking wet dream but I digress--when I was hosted at one of my interviews, I stayed with the medical fraternity guys, and they showed me the Paris Hilton sex tape... oh so good times. 🙂

Then at another interview the next day, I discovered that the wife of my student host went to my undergraduate college for a week before she got the bejesus scared out of her! We immediately hit it off because we shared the same sentiments about the school. But then again, it's pretty sad that the highlight of that whole interview experience was staying with my hosts... because I did not dig the school all that much. 🙄

   Are these stories for real? I can't stop laughing.

I think there are definitely pros and cons to staying with a host. I can say that both times that I had been with a host, they have both been friendly and helpful. And it both helped that they lived close to campus so it was easy to get to the building in the morning. But with one host, it was a problem because I had been freezing my butt off the night before the interview because he refused to turn on the heater. And the other host was walking in and out of the livingroom in the dead middle of the night.... well...... i'm glad that the next three interviews I have, I will be staying with a friend.
