STUDENT HOSTS - part of admissions process?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone know if student hosts are ever part of the admissions process?

Probably not officially, but as an undergrad host and tour guide I know that the admissions office listened to me if I had input on a particular student. I spoke up for a long time friend and he got his transfer acceptance two weeks later. There was one other time I spoke up, too.

Moral of the story: treat them as if they will be evaluating you, although I think it is ok to let your hair down a little bit. Be polite and courteous, though.

Good luck.

i doubt it. i mean unless the host complains about you, there isnt an evaluation sheet for the host or anything. just be polite like you would with any other host.

and if your wondering if the host program is mandatory, i didnt do the host program and im in just fine.

^^

hey, did I mention that you might want to withdraw from Creighton if you do not want to go there?

You never know. A good rule of thumb is to consider the interview from the second you enter campus to the second you leave (this applies for an interview for anything). This doesn't mean you have to be formal everywhere you go, but be polite, be on good behavior, don't complain about the interview to the host, etc.

For us we will not be able to evaluate students in any way. The only way the admissions office will hear anything is if a student goes out of their way to cause major problems. The example they used was if a student comes into town, goes out and gets drunk, and throws up all over your living room.

So my guess is that at most schools you would REALLY have to mess up for the admissions office to ever hear anything.

Your interview starts as soon as you get into town, and doesn't end until you leave town. Don't be a tool, you never know who you might be talking to. FYI, at NYMC they told you to write down the name of the student you stayed with, but not sure if they did anything with the info.

Is it better to stay with a student host or stay in a hotel? Does it look like you have more interest in the school if you stay with a student?

I highly doubt it matters. Your student host does NOT have input to the admissions process, unless you are an atrocious houseguest and are lewd, crude and lascivious.

It doesn't "look better" if you stay with a student -- they are doing you a favor saving you a hotel bill, maybe giving you some insight on student life. You are likely inconveniencing someone who volunteered to have a guest. In most cases your student host won't have input in the decisions, although if you get them upset with you (by trashing their place, stealing their SO, etc) they can certainly damage your chances.

What's the problem? If you've made it this far in premedicine you're obviously adept at being superficial and fake - so, just keep the game face on. =]

People shouldn't even bother posting - they should PM you directly.

When I was a host last year, we we told that the admissions office wants to know if the applicants 'misbehave'. Out of nine people that stayed with me, there was only one really obnoxious kid. I just let it go because I felt that it was my job to feed him and to let him stay. I was delighted to learn several months later that he had been rejected....and his MCAT and GPA were both above the school's average (he advertized that every 10 minutes, too). It was reassurring to know that the admissions process works.

I am going to echo the sentiment of many others here: They probably are not part of the adcom's decision. They are just regular students like you or I am/were. I'd think someone would have to be a real pain for a host to go out of their way and report them to the adcom. Who knows, I just know I likely wouldn't go to the trouble. 😳

Student hosts aren't covert operatives for the adcoms (they don't submit an evaluation of candidates after they leave or anything). But, as some other people have said, if you're really obnoxious and piss off your host, they may go tell the adcoms. When I interviewed here last year, there was a guy who was interviewing who was arrogant and obnoxious as hell. I mean, I remember that when I came to the revisit weekend 6 months later, I was praying that this guy hadn't gotten in. He ended up going to a great med school, so he probably had amazing stats. He was rejected at DMS (at least partly) because one of the students who did an info session for some of the applicants complained to the admissions people about him (but, this is the only time I've heard of it happening, so I'm guessing it's very rare). The reason a med student complaint could sink you is two-fold: Adcoms care about the the current students at the school and are probably inclined to trust their opinions about people in future classes. Also, one of the big objectives of interviewing candidates for adcoms is to judge the personality of the applicant to see if they are cut out for medicine and to see if they'll fit at the med school (and if a current student is motivated enough to complain, that would probably be a red flag). So, the moral of the story is: if your personality is so bad (especially if you're really arrogant) that one of the current med students at the school where you're interviewing thinks that being around you next year would make their life (and everyone else's life at the school) worse, they may just be motivated enough to complain to the adcoms, and that could very well be the kiss of death for your application. Then again, if they feel so strongly that they will go out of their way to complain about you, I'm guessing that you wouldn't fit into that med school anyway. So, I would encourage everyone to stay with a student host, just don't be arrogant and obnoxious. That's just my $.02.

Most student hosts do not, but one student host I stayed with did let me know he was on he MD/PhD adcom (luckily I wasn't applying MD/PhD). I don't think it's documented to show your interest in the school or anything, but I'd have to say I do student hosting for some selfish reasons, I suppose. 1 it saves me money and they're usually sure to get me to the interview on-time, and help me now where to go. Second, it's a REALLY good way to get to meet the other med students in an informal setting. For me, most of the schools have great programs, opportunities, buildings, rankings, etc., but I've definitely been able to see differences in the students, and how well I'd "fit" at different schools. Highly highly recommended.
