Does anyone know how student loan deferment works during the AEGD? Do we have to fill out some kind of paper work or is this taken care of by the program that we will be at?
Thanks

Because the loan is between you and your lender, the military has nothing to do with it. When you get to your first duty station you will contact your lender for a loan forbearance or defferment form - whichever you are going to try for.

You will qualify for a military deferment. You get the paperwork online, have your CO sign it and send it in with a copy of your orders. I've seen them give deferments for up to 5 yrs. What this means is, you do not have to make any payments while in deferment and all of your subsidized loans interest will be paid by the government. However, you are still responsible for all of the interest which will accrue from your unsubsidized loans.

Subsidized loans are a thing of the past. Obama is signing legislation to end all subsidized loans for graduate and professional students which will be starting in 2012.

Keep in mind that you have two options.

1. Take the military deferment as described above.

2. Participate in the public service loan forgiveness program.

If you're going to just do your time and get out, defer the loans. If you plan on staying in for 10 years, you may want to consider the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

You can apply for forbearance on your loans. In other words, they accrue interest, but you don't have to pay. I would recommend stretching your payments if that is a concern. Better to pay at least something IMO.
