I am a junior right now and will be applying to medical school next summer (summer 2012) for admission in fall 2013. I was wondering if it would be OK to study abroad during spring of senior year from late feb/early march to june. Would most of my interviews be done with if I apply very early?

How about schools that start their semester in late jan/feb to may?

thanks in advance

get your AMCAS out june 1st, submit your secondaries and LORs ASAP, take your MCAT way before the summer.

you may still miss out on a few straggling schools that invite you for an interview after xmas vacation, but if you are a competitive applicant you should be fine.

it's a risk, but studying abroad is awesome and shouldnt be passed up. you may think differently if you have no interviews by the time jan rolls around tho.

I think your plan sounds fine if you apply in June and are competitive. However, you also might want to consider delaying your application one cycle so you can study abroad for a year. You will never get the chance to have such an awesome experience again (at least not for years and years!). I think that most returning students wish that they had had more time abroad. (I know that I did!)

I have a year-long research internship opportunity available to me abroad (through which I might be able to get my name on a paper), but I would have to leave the states around August of 2012. If I'm applying for med school at the beginning of the 2012 summer, how do you think schools will respond? Are there options of phone/web interviews? Will this make me less competitive as an applicant?
