Just curious, how many of you listen to music while studying? Do you find it distracting or helpful? If you do, have any recommendations?

Personally I can only listen to it if I'm doing something like psych, literature etc....when it comes to the sciences or math it irritates me. Lately my playlist has featured Washed Out, Matt Maltese, and Joep Beving.

Anyone have any specific songs that get them pumped up to take on the world (Or go for a long run, ace that final etc)? Or am I just crazy like that?

A music post? I'm all ears. 😀

What ended up working the best was either non-overly-emotional sounds (meditation music but also background noises like white noise, water...) or music I had already listened to over and over again. New music or overly emotional music (e.g. certain classical) didn't jive as well. Usually music with words didn't work unless I had already listened to it many times.

In the end, though, you will probably know what you like the best. I find though that it isn't so much music that helps but the presence of a background atmosphere (e.g. if it was too silent and no noise at all I'd have a problem too!). So if anything I'd say if it helps you concentrate, keep listening to music, but if you're losing focus, then switch off completely or find a source with a background noise that keeps you grounded.

I often listen to classical music or white noise while studying. Proves pretty helpful to me in most circumstances

Depends on who you are. I think psychologically they've found that if you study with music, you do better on the test if you're also listening to music. My uni has a test facility with a classical music room but not all students have this option.

I personally limit any music to wordless/instrumental stuff if I'm studying, and if I really need to focus or am trying to come to an understanding of a new concept I don't turn music on at all.

I can't. I get to distracted and end up paying attention to the music more than to what I'm studying. I was able to listen to more ambient post-rock kinda bands like mew and explosions in the sky when I studied for calculus but other than that nahhh

I've found music to be pretty important to me when I'm studying. I don't listen to anything with lyrics (or at least ones I can understand). I've found the "Deep Focus" playlist on spotify to be pretty good for me. My problem is the noises people make in the library break my attention so I need some background noise that's predictable.

+1 on the interstellar soundtrack!

All you need is the soundtrack to the Revenant. That is my go to! But, the Interstellar soundtrack is also very good.

Depends on what I'm doing. Repetitive tasks like problem sets? Music please, usually TATW with A&B. Reading/rewriting notes? Silence.

I've never understand how people can listen to certain classical music while studying. The sounds are so beautiful

This. Just this. Any and all assignments or classes. Perfect homework companion music.

I find it a major distraction. I only play music for a couple minutes during my "mini breaks" to unwind a little before diving back into work.
It helps me refocus, but doesn't keep me in focus.

I like listening to music. I prefer instrumental music though. If I need to do "crunch time" homework or essays I listen to "motivational" soundtracks. For laid back essays and assignments, I use more softer music like this or this.

I can't listen to anything I can sing along to, so I try to either listen to new/unfamiliar songs or instrumental music. Nujabes and Tycho are great.

Movie soundtracks can make problem sets feel like huge feats

I've also made a playlist of music that's in languages I don't know, which eliminates the "no words" factor

The Inception soundtrack is awesome study music.
