Personally I like studying at home so I can get a snack, watch some TV or relax intermittently. However, they ARE distractions and it takes a while to get back into the groove to where you become that fine-honed premed studying machine.

So what do you guys think is the conversion time between the library and home?

I think it's at about 1:3. At the library, after one hour where my brain feel slagged I'd have gone through at least all of my day's lecture notes a few time.

I studied nearly 4 hours straight at the library last night, the chances of pulling that off at home are slim to none.

It's good to mix it up now and then, too.

Those days when it's just kicking your ass and you think you're going to die if you have to read one more freaking paragraph, it's best to pack up and go to the coffee shop or something. Yep, productivity will suffer, but at least you'll get something done.

I've been a 100% home studier in the past, but I'm beginning to see the wisdom of your approach, here.

I agree. There is no way I can do a great deal of concentrating at home. I am able to do math/spanish/physics at home, but classes where I have to read and understand detailed material...like cell bio....or genetics. There's no way I can study in my apt. There are distractions upon distractions.

At the library I am forced to sit down and understand everything. I have a great deal of focus too. I am a "pre-med machine". (unless someone near me is being loud, then I just throw my chair at their head.)

At home I will always want to eat, drink, watch tv, listen to music, talk to roomate, clean, the list goes on. Seinfeld is a temptation that always pulls me away from studying...especially when it's on for an hour every night.

I've studied for 9 hours straight in a library before (albeit one where I could bring food in). I would never, ever study that long in my room without stopping to watch tv, nap, surf sdn, etc.

However, I prefer to study at Starbucks, a happy medium. There is no tv or internet to distract me and I generally won't fall asleep in public (though it has happened in extreme cases), plus I've got unlimited caffeine at the ready and I can people watch when I need to take a short mental break. As long as I don't bring reading material or talkative friends, and as long as the comfy green armchair is available, I can usually go about 5-6 hours before I burn out. Headphones are a must, however, because there is always at least one obnoxiously loud person on a cell phone sitting right next to me.

I'm definitely a home studier all the way. I admit I take a lot of breaks to surf, eat, etc., but I like it better that way. If I distract myself every hour or so, I actually find my studying is more efficient. Otherwise, I would just sit there with the book in my hand instead of doing real studying. Having a few distractions actually gives me something to work for.

I can't get crap done at home, there's just too much temptation to goof off. I go to Barnes & Nobles a lot to study.

i can see the benefits of the library but when my friend forces me to go .........all i end up doing is falling asleep because its too damn quiet. i need some type of non monotonous nbise to keep up and studying well...........and unfortunately the library does not present me with that option....

that is unless my friend keeps on pouring eye drop stuff in my eye to keep me awake...the fear of her putting more of that crap in me keeps me awake for at least an hour haha....

I am an avid library or coffehouse studier - there are FAR too many fun things to do at home...like chat on SDN about how you study best 🙂 . . .
When I'm in the library, I figure there is nothing fun going to happen there, and so I make each minute I'm there productive to get out fast and do something fun!

When I do light studying or paper-writing, I stay home. During times of light studying I usually keep the t.v. on as sort of a background noise. It keeps my mind from wandering. When I need to do some more intense studying or preparation (remember the MCAT?) I sit in the library. However, I must be careful because I have been known to fall asleep when I am in the library.

Hardly ever study in the library. Can't stand the dead silence. Usually go to public places like a coffeeshop.
